Tutors are responsible for encouraging students to develop a systemic approach to studying that will serve them in many courses as well as integrate effective study and learning strategies to maximize the student’s potential for academic progress. Under general supervision, the tutor will:
- Provide individual in-person and online tutoring sessions for specific subjects;
- Provide academic support for students enrolled in Learning Support Reading and English, Composition and Rhetoric, Literature, Essay Composition;
- Assist students of various courses with creating and optimizing writing projects;
- Maintain a tutoring schedule convenient to our students;
- Maintain a positive, warm attitude that encourages students to learn;
- Facilitate study skills workshops for students;
- Deliver presentations to promote Student Success Center services and other helpful subjects
- Perform basic duties to support the daily operations of the tutoring program
Minimum qualifications are a Bachelor’s Degree in English (or closely related field) from a national or regionally accredited college or university with an overall GPA of 3.0 in English or related subject.
- Demonstrated ability and experience in English
- Excellent communication skills
- Flexibility with working conditions and schedules
- Ability and willingness to work with students from diverse cultural backgrounds, age levels and levels of academic preparation
Must be skilled in computer operation and proficient with job-related software programs. Must also be open to training and skills development. Flexibility to work on Newton and DeKalb campuses desired. Previous tutoring or teaching experience is a plus, as well as ability to quickly establish rapport and communication with students and instructors and maintain strict confidentiality of all student information, material, and discussions shared in the tutoring relationship.
