Summary: The main objective of the ESL Bilingual Ambassador in the East Baton Rouge Parish School System is to support district and school translation needs as well as increase parent and family involvement in schools. His or her role is to establish effective communication between home and school and improve community outreach and training opportunities for parents and families of students in grades Pre-K through 12th that will impact academic performance of our English language learners. 

Essential Duties and Responsibilities: 

  • Contact parents and families through phone calls, home visits and meetings at schools or district sites in order to encourage participation in school and/or district activities and events.
  • Provide information to parents concerning district policies and procedures such as registration, PTA, curriculum, assessment, uniform, discipline etc. as stipulated in the East Baton Rouge Parish School System Parent/Student Handbook.
  • Contact outside community agencies for the purpose of seeking resources and activities that will increase the participation of Hispanic families in school and parent training opportunities.
  • Help to establish a training program such as a parent Café, Platicas, or Parent University to bring topics related to family and school, parent ESL classes, computer training and the GED Program.
  • Attend any district supported advisory councils or professional development activities to support English Learners.
  • Provide interpreting services in English and Spanish for parents, teachers, and administrators. This includes, but is not limited to: parent/teacher conferences, school and/or district meetings, report card conferences, parent workshops, evening events at schools, and any other type of activity where communication is required in the Spanish/English language by school personnel, Central Office Administration and district needs.
  • Provide translating of district and school documents designed to inform parents such as letters, bulletins, announcements, calendars, notices, web page information, articles, flyers, newsletters, community resources communication, curricular, technology, food services communication, special education, etc. as required by school personnel, the ESL Department, and Central Office Administration.
  • Perform other position-related duties as assigned by the Superintendent, district administration, and the ESL Department.
  • Maintain accurate records and documentation of all activities, translations, meetings, and support.
  • Assist families to understand their children’s educational needs and resources available within the school.
  • Help pupils overcome barriers to school attendance and achievement.
  • Enable families to convey their concerns to school personnel and maintain open lines of communication, including home visits as applicable and appropriate.
  • Mobilize parental support for students’ educational programming.
  • Provide information to facilitate the family’s use of community resources.
  • Facilitate training for parents and families after regular work hours or on the weekends as applicable and appropriate.
  • Participate in staff conferences related to the pupils’ behavior, adjustment and academic progress.
  • Consult with teachers and pupil services personnel about student’s living situations and neighborhood circumstances.
  • Promote timely and relevant information to parents/guardians concerning school and district activities, operations, and procedures to improve home/school communication.
  • Make personal contacts through a variety of modalities (electronic, face-to face, home visits, etc.) to encourage parental engagement.
  • Researches, collects, organizes, and coordinates resource materials and activities to facilitate parental involvement and engagement in their child’s education, under the direction of the campus administration and/or the ESL Department.
  • Assist in the organization and participation of campus-based outreach activities, such as curriculum nights, special events, PTA meetings, etc.
  • After calling parents, ask the ESL Instructional Specialist to input and save in JCampus. This is mandatory documentation for LDOE.

Essential Functions/Qualifications/Requirements: 

The ESL Ambassador must be fluent in English and in Spanish specifically in the areas of speaking, reading, and writing, have the flexibility to work during parent and/or community events, have his/her own transportation, have the ability to work positively with other parents and district personnel, ability to take initiative in coordinating and organizing activities and events, and have the ability to accurately collect, document, organize, and maintain data and documentation for reports. 

Education and Experience:

The ESL Bilingual Ambassador must have a bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university. The candidate must also have at least one year of professional employment experience in which the skills required to accurately collect, document, organize, and maintain data and documentation for reports was employed. A plus would be work experience involving the ability to take initiative in coordinating and organizing activities and events. The ESL Bilingual Ambassador must be fluent in English and in Spanish particularly in the areas of speaking, reading, and writing.

Technological Abilities: 

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be proficient in general use of a computer, the use of Email as a form of communication, and other job-specific equipment, software, and/or applications. 

Note: New employees coming to EBRPSS/current employees new to a position, must use the Verifent website to verify qualifying years of experience (outside of EBRPSS) aligned to the job description. All new employees to the district/current employees new to a position will receive 0 years of experience aligned to the job description until the verification of previous experience aligned to the job description is received.
