Position Summary

The Bilingual Family Liaison is an Early RSI Grant funded position and will be assigned to an Early Learning Program Preschool with a high refugee enrollment and is responsible for building cooperative working relationships between families and school personnel to empower families to partner with the school to become active participants in the education of their chidlren.

Responsibilities and Essential Functions: The following duties are representative of performance expectations. A reasonable accommodation may be made to enable a qualified individual with a disability to perform essential functions.

  • Work with principal and staff to organize and implement family activities.
  • Collaborate with school administrators and staff on family engagement work.
  • Serve as a liaison betwen community agencies and families.
  • Coordinate volunteer activities.
  • Serve as a resource person for staff and families.
  • Work with building leadership to coordinate services available for families.
  • Develop positive rapport with students, families and school officials.
  • Gather and compile information through the use of surveys as instructed.
  • Encourage and increase family involvement at assigned school site(s).
  • Recruit students and families for participation in programs.
  • Meets regularly with building staff to stay abreast of school and family concerns.
  • Serves as a liaison to families for the purpose of removing barriers for students and families.
  • Participates on various committees.
  • Attend school and district meetings, forums and conferences regarding family engagement programming.
  • Work with ESL Program Manager to submit evidence of support for refugee families.
  • Reports to and performs any other tasks assigned by the Department Supervisor and/or the Chief of Academic Offices (CAO).


Required: Must be met at time of application except where noted:

  • High School Diploma or GED
  • Experience in working with parents, staff and citizens within the Akron Public Schools community.
  • Prior experience working with refugee population in some capacity.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Ability to work independently.
  • Ability to read, write, and speak in Nepali.
  • Communication skills and Technology skills.
  • Must have a valid Ohio driver’s license.


  • Ability ro use technology to organize data to allow for decision making.
  • Knowledge of ESL Program.
  • Experience in a preschool or elementary school setting.
  • Prior experience (or volunteer experieince) with volunteer social service agencies or organizations.

Working Conditions: Mental Demands/Physical Demands/Environmental Factors:

  • Frequent district wide travel and occasional prolonged and irregular hours.
  • Subject to frequent interruptions, noises, odors, temperatures throughout the work day.
  • Sits, stands, and moves intermittently througout the work day.
