Job Description

SUMMARY:

Bloomfield College of Montclair State University is seeking an enthusiastic and dedicated ESL Coordinator (Temporary position) to support students whose native or primary language is not English. The ESL Coordinator will work closely with faculty to create and implement an effective assessment system to identify and support ESL learners. Utilizing high-impact practices in higher education, the coordinator will build a comprehensive support system to help these students thrive academically and successfully graduate.

PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: 

  • Assessment Development: Design and implement an assessment system to evaluate ESL students’ language proficiency and academic needs, ensuring alignment with institutional goals and standards.
  • Curriculum Support: Collaborate with faculty to integrate ESL strategies into the curriculum, enhancing instructional practices that promote language acquisition and academic success.
  • Student Support: Provide individualized support to ESL students, including academic advising, tutoring, and access to resources that enhance their learning experience.
  • Program Development: Develop and oversee programs that promote language development and cultural integration, such as workshops, seminars, and peer mentoring initiatives.
  • Data Analysis: Collect and analyze data on student performance and progress to inform program improvements and support strategies.
  • Collaboration: Work closely with faculty, academic advisors, and other support staff to create an inclusive learning environment that fosters student engagement and success.
  • Training and Resources: Provide training and resources for faculty on effective ESL instructional strategies and cultural competency to enhance classroom inclusivity.
  • Community Engagement: Foster connections with community organizations and resources to support ESL students in their academic and personal development.
  • Policy Development: Contribute to the development of policies and practices that support ESL students, ensuring compliance with institutional and accreditation standards.

QUALIFICATIONS:

REQUIRED: 

  • Master’s degree in TESOL, Applied Linguistics, Education, or a related field.
  • Experience in ESL education and coordination within a higher education setting.
  • Strong understanding of assessment tools and techniques for ESL learners.
  • Familiarity with high-impact practices in higher education.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to work collaboratively in a diverse and inclusive environment.
  • Proficiency in a second language is a plus.

PREFERRED:

  • Experience working with diverse populations and understanding of cultural differences.
  • Knowledge of resources available for ESL students, both on campus and in the community.
  • Strong organizational skills and ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously.
