The Akron Board of Education announces an opening for a ESL (English as Second Language) Specialist, Job Code S232, TS 422 (190 Days). Salary TBD. Collective Bargaining Unit – AEA. This is a position funded by a grant from an entity external to Akron Public Schools and therefore, is contingent upon approved funding by the external entity.

Position Summary: The position of ESL (English as Second Language) Specialist assists with facilitating and implementing ESL program services according to federal, state and/or District guidelines. This position will

assist with student screening, reporting, OELPA administration, etc., in order to ensure that all mandates are met in order that EL student and family needs are met.

Responsibilities and Essential Functions: The following duties are representative of performance expectations. A reasonable accommodation may be made to enable a qualified individual with a disability to

  • Assists with development and implementation of training and staff development programs to support instructional activities related to ESL services within the District.
  • Schedules, monitors and manages EL identification/screening training and OELPA program administration.
  • Coordinates with building coaches and OSI to identify instructional needs.
  • Coordinates with MTSS Specialists to identify district EL instructional and support needs.
  • Performs any monthly/annual audits as assigned. Provide follow-up and reporting as required.
  • Collaborates with District content supervisors and instructional leadership in order to assist with design, development and implementation of effective training and staff development activities related to ESL programs and services.
  • Collaborates with school and community partners to develop and implement programs to increase family engagement with a focus on improvement of student academics. Monitor programs for effectiveness and provide reporting as required.
  • Collects and monitors diagnostic data related to academic performance, attendance, and other identified metrics in order to assist with development and implementation of services and interventions in order tosupport ESL instruction and programming.
  • Develops and implements student/family/community advisory groups as a source of information and program quality assurance monitoring.
  • Assists with the implementation and delivery of School Improvement initiatives and programs as required.
  • Assists with recruitment and selection activities as may be assigned.
  • Compiles, analyzes and reports data as assigned.
  • Assists with new employee on-boarding and orientation activities as assigned.
  • Collaborates and supports the district initiatives regarding curriculum and instruction.
  • Assists with monitoring and tracking grant deliverables and required reporting according to grant standards, timelines and regulations.
  • All other relevant duties as assigned.
  • Reports to the ESL Content Supervisor.

Budget:

  • Ensures that programs are cost effective and that funds are managed prudently.
  • Provides documentation and reporting as required.
  • Assists with departmental budget monitoring and reporting.
  • Qualifications:Bachelor’s Degree in Education, Social Work, Health and Human Services or related field and at least two (2) of experience working in a role related to the delivery of services to non-English speaking populations.
  • Prior experience compiling, analyzing and reporting data.
  • Ability to communicate effectively.
  • Ability to work independently without direct monitoring and supervision.
  • Preferred:Master’s Degree in Education. TESOL or related field.
  • Prior experience with grant writing, development and monitoring.
  • Working Conditions: Mental Demands/Physical Demands/Environmental Factors:Frequent district wide travel and occasional prolonged and irregular hours.
  • Subject to frequent interruptions, noises, odors, temperatures throughout work day.
  • Sits, stands and moves intermittently throughout work day.
