Working closely alongside Amnesty’s global thematic refugee and migrants’ rights team, this role will develop and implement Amnesty International’s strategy towards the European Union in the field of asylum and migration, in line with agreed key priorities.

The Advocate will provide robust legal and political analysis, develop informed and effective advocacy strategies and recommendations, draft high-quality legal and policy texts and advocacy documents. Often working in coalition and partnership, strong networking, collaboration, and consensus building skills are required.

About You:

A motivated and strategic advocacy professional with a passion for human rights and substantial experience influencing policymakers and legislators. You know how to navigate the EU policy environment, use advocacy levers, work alongside diverse stakeholders, and engage a variety of stakeholders in joint action to influence outcomes in policy and practice. You are a strong communicator and team player with excellent written and oral communication skills English. You work flexibly under pressure with a strong ability and judgement in priority setting and meeting deadlines.

Main Responsibilities:

Policy and Strategy:

  • Work with all other parts of Amnesty International (AI) and the ERO’s multidisciplinary team to design and implement targeted strategies and plans aimed at promoting and protecting human rights in the EU’s asylum and migration policies in line with agreed office priorities
  • Ensure strong coordination of advocacy calls and action across European capitals on EU asylum and migration work
  • Monitor and analyse EU developments in the field of EU asylum and migration law and policy as they relate to Amnesty International’s work
  • Identify opportunities to influence EU asylum and migration policy, develop and draft positions on the EU’s legal and policy initiatives in this field and devise advocacy strategies linked to Amnesty’s priorities

Advocacy:

  • Research, write, edit and disseminate advocacy documents such as letters, briefings, and policy papers, for internal and external use
  • Represent Amnesty International and act as a spokesperson in regular public and private meetings with interlocutors from the EU institutions
  • Influence policy debates within area of responsibility through opinion pieces, engagement on social media and strategic use of public diplomacy
  • Organise advocacy meetings, with Amnesty’s researchers and individual Human Rights Defenders/ rights holders

Skills And Experience:

  • Proven ability at devising and implementing advocacy strategies
  • Understanding of gender, antiracism and diversity issues and principles of gender mainstreaming, particularly in relation to migration
  • In-depth knowledge of EU asylum and migration laws and policies and international human rights and refugee law. Knowledge of Economic Social and Cultural Rights (ESCR) would be an asset.
  • Excellent understanding of the institutional framework of the EU and experience in conducting advocacy at the EU level would be an asset.
  • Proven record in writing and editing in English. Command of at least one other EU language would be an asset
  • Ability to clearly communicate complex legal or political contexts both to decision-makers and to members of the movement so they can be translated into campaigning and advocacy action within Amnesty.
