Overview
At Houston Methodist, the Faculty Fellow is responsible for utilizing this position as the bridge between the Post-Doctoral Fellowship program and the Independent Scientist track. As a Faculty Fellow, this position will be granted a pathway to independently submit grants and publications, oversee projects, continued professional development for the employee through an outlined plan with appropriate resources from Department Chair, Center/Program Director or supervising faculty. The Faculty Fellow position leads research assistants and research technicians and mentors Post-Doctoral Fellows. This position has a two-year limit.

Responsibilities
PEOPLE ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
- Coordinates and provides technical direction to the work activities of research staff engaged in projects, under the direction of the Principal Investigator (PI).
- Provides education and training to new staff members, including physicians on use of assigned system(s) as well as on-going training as needed. Coordinates and conducts training for new system implementations or software upgrades.
- Provides contributions towards improvement of department scores for employee engagement on department scorecard, i.e. peer-to-peer accountability.
SERVICE ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
- Assists with implementation and education of departmental based safety initiatives and standards of practice.
- Plans, directs and coordinates laboratory research projects.
- Through data analysis and interpretation compiles, writes, and submits project results to the Principal Investigator
- Attends institutional committee meetings.
QUALITY/SAFETY ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
- Reviews scientific literature related to field. (EF)
- Ensures that the grant applications are focused on National Institutes of Health (NIH) guidelines for rigor and reproducibility in applications, to include:
- Scientific premise of the proposed research
- Rigorous experimental design for robust and unbiased results
- Consideration of relevant biological variables
- Authentication of key biological and/or chemical resources
- Identifies opportunities for corrective action and process improvement providing recommendations and contributes to meeting department and laboratory targets for quality and safety.
FINANCE ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
- Uses resources efficiently; does not waste supplies. Self-motivated to independently manage time effectively and prioritize daily tasks.
- Participates in grant writing. Secures independent funding.
GROWTH/INNOVATION ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
- Participates in writing manuscripts and publications.
- Independently publishes in relevant journals.
- Seeks opportunities to expand learning beyond baseline competencies with a focus on continual development. Remains current on professional issues and clinical skills. Completes and updates the My Development Plan on an on-going basis. Ensures own career discussions occur with appropriate management.

Qualifications
EDUCATION
- Doctor of Medicine (MD) from an accredited medical school or Doctoral Degree (PhD) in medical field
WORK EXPERIENCE
- Three years postdoctoral fellow experience, of which one year must be completed at Houston Methodist Academic Institute.
