Division Information

The Concepción Mesquita Multicultural Center at Lane Community College is pleased to invite applications for the position of Latinx Student Program Coordinator. The Multicultural Center (MCC), located in Building 1 on the Main Campus, creates an atmosphere of belonging where students from all ethnic backgrounds can receive information on admission, registration, course and program planning, student success, and referrals to on-campus and community services. The MCC also houses several student unions, for example, Movimiento Estudiantil Chicano de Aztlán (MECHA), Black Student Union (BSU), Native American Student Association (NASA), and Asian and Pacific Islander Student Union (APISU). This position will involve coordinating with local school districts; implementing bridge, transition, and college readiness programs such as the Puertas Abiertas Leadership Academy; working with programs such as OSU Juntos and Downtown Languages; and assisting the student union, e.g. MECHA, with cultural and outreach events.

Position Information

The Latinx Student Coordinator supports Latinx students at Lane Community College. Program goals include helping students to make a smooth transition to college, helping students identify available resources, and providing follow-up services, and offering a variety of opportunities to learn about Latinx culture, values, and traditions. The Latinx Student Coordinator may assist efforts of Lane Community College to attain a Hispanic Serving Institution (HSI) status. The selected candidate will actively work to support the education and success of Chicano/Mexicano/Hispanic/Latinx and Caribbean students. The selected candidate will work to design and provide programs that increase student and campus understanding of historical, current, and emergent strengths, contributions, and challenges facing this community. The selected candidate will contribute directly to Latinx student education by providing student support services, mentoring students, advising the student organization, e.g. MECHA, possibly teaching classes as assigned by the college within the position’s 1.0 FTE, and event planning with various college units, for example, with the student organization and the bridge and leadership programs. The Coordinator will guide Latinx students in exploring their culture and identity and defining a future for themselves. Close collaboration with the local community, local schools, and community groups around the state will also be expected. Bilingual, Spanish/English Language Skills strongly desired.

Faculty members are expected to be skilled educators, with a passion for teaching and continuous improvement in best practices that support equitable student success. The primary responsibilities of full-time faculty is to provide quality education and teaching in a range of community college courses, which may include transfer and/or career technical courses, and to engage in academic professional activities which advance the goals of the College and Division. Faculty members are responsible for following College and Division policies and procedures in support of teaching and learning.

Required Experience:

Position Purpose:

Contracted faculty members are professional educators with the primary responsibilities of providing instruction and academic student support services respectfully, equitably, and inclusively to a diverse, multicultural, and multilingual student population, and professional activities contributing to the college, in alignment with Lane’s Vision, Mission, and Values.

This position performs all of the duties of a full-time educator and college instructor including: instruction of college courses in multiple modalities as assigned, which may include both in-person and online environments; curriculum development and course design; outcomes assessment and program review; mentoring students; professional development; participation in discipline leadership, division and college business; and other professional duties as assigned.

Essential Functions:

Culture-Specific Responsibilities

• Be informed on the state and national resources and forces that impact the Latinx community, especially with regard to academic access/success and immigrant status.
• Assist in the recruitment, retention, and academic success of Latinx students.
• Collaborate with the representatives from programs within local, state, and federal agencies, which serve Latinx student populations (e.g. the Oregon Department of Education, Lane ESD, Migrant Education, Plaza de Nuestra Comunidad, et cetera).
• Coordinate and cooperate with Latinx community programs (e.g. Plaza de Nuestra Comunidad; DevNW, OSU Juntos, Downtown Languages, et cetera).
• Serve as a campus liaison to the Latinx community.
• Serve as an on-campus advocate for accessibility to services and education for Latinx students by collaborating with admissions, financial aid, academic and student services areas.
• Engage college employees in support of the Latinx Student Program, the mission of the Concepción (Connie) Mesquita Multicultural Center, and the success of Latinx students and applicants to the college.
• Provide bilingual guidance to Latinx students with financial aid rules and regulations; academic planning and scholarship assistance.
• Serve as an on-campus advocate for accessibility to services and education by collaborating with admissions, financial aid, academic and student services areas.
• Deepen community involvement and college education through outreach and consistent communication.
• Guide and support faculty and staff on resources and behavior related to Latinx issues.
• Advise student organizations, for example MECHA, promote student leadership, and plan events within established budgets.

Bridge Programs and Leadership Academy (e.g. Puertas Abiertas)

• Design and implement a year-round leadership academy to address the career, academic, and social needs of middle school and high school Latinx and multiracial students of Latinx descent.
• Recruit students, volunteers, and instructors on campus and in the community.
• Collaborate with and conduct outreach activities to community programs and schools.
• Teach appropriate principles of cooperative and engaged social interaction to Latinx high school and middle school students.
• Collaborate with the Dean to disburse associated grants and assistance funds, including any through the Lane Foundation.

Coaching and Mentoring

• Collaborate and communicate openly and in a positive manner.
• Serve as faculty advisor to Latinx student organizations, for example MECHA .
• Perform student and community outreach to deepen understanding and expand opportunities.
• Provide compassionate assistance to first-generation immigrant/college students in their transition to college and complex enrollment systems.
• Ensure accessibility and inclusivity for all students using the Multicultural Center.
• Assist students in need of confidential guidance, provide follow-through care and resources.
• Provide information on the availability of scholarships.
• Assist students in planning and implementing relevant programs and activities on campus and in the community.
• Advise Latinx and other students in academic and cultural affairs.
• Assist students in completing forms and understanding financial aid options.
• Provide leadership opportunities for Lane students through classes, trainings, and programs.
• Assist in programs and strategic planning in the Concepción (Connie) Mesquita Multicultural Center.
• Ensure accessibility and inclusivity for all students using the Multicultural Center. Assist students in need of confidential guidance, provide follow-through care and resources.
• Coordinate and assist with other student programs and instructional departments on campus (e.g. Career Pathways, High School Connections, GED/ESL, et cetera).
• Advise and engage with MECHA, manage budget expenditures and reports
• Collaborate with and support the Multicultural Center staff and mission

Professional Responsibilities

• Comply with College policies and procedures, including accountability for leave time, timesheet completion, release time, textbook ordering, and related functions.
• Participate in faculty performance evaluation processes.
• Maintain, post, and participate in regular meetings and office hours.

• Demonstrate behavior consistent with the “Statement on professional ethics” of the American Association of University Professor.

Faculty/Instructional Responsibilities

• This position allows for the teaching of courses related to Latinx issues as assigned within the 1.0 FTE position. The successful candidate might be assigned courses in their field of expertise. Teaching is a critical component of modeling and mentoring student success and leadership, for example in the Puertas Abiertas Leadership Academy. Expectations of teachers include the following:
• Maintain and post office hours in alignment with College expectations as assigned within the 1.0 FTE of this position.
• Post student attendance, grades, and course syllabus in accordance with college timelines.
• Ensure a safe, quality classroom or lab, including equipment, supplies, and inventory
• Ensure that class environments are hospitable and a safe place to learn for all students.
• Collaborate with campus colleagues in supporting Latinx student success.
• Confer with students regarding course materials and the learning management system (LMS), for example Moodle.
• Keep students informed of course progress through regular contact and prompt response to students’ work.
• Establish expected learning outcomes for student evaluation and make these clear to students on syllabus.
• Support student instructional outcomes by developing innovative online and in-classroom presentation and delivery techniques; maintain awareness of emerging technologies.
• Incorporate college values into curriculum and promote a respectful learning environment.
• Create a productive partnership with library and information resources.
• Collaborate with campus colleagues on the development and promotion of multicultural and diversity-based materials.
• Teach and assess students in a culturally respectful, responsive, and sustaining manner.
• Must demonstrate an active concern for students, staff, and the public.
• Teach courses per the needs of Latinx students and the college.
• Teach Latinx culture and leadership courses which deepen support community involvement engagement and college education student success.
• Develop training and course materials relating to Latinx issues, culture, and history.
• Engage in positive collaboration with peers in curriculum work
• Other duties as assigned.

Supervision Statement:

The Dean of Student Engagement is the supervisor of this Program Coordinator position. The dean will provide guidance and direction to the coordinator regarding responsibilities, including program oversight and authority. The program coordinator may provide direction and set priorities for other workers as directed by the Dean.

Physical Demands/Working Environment:

This position works in varied environments. May be exposed to usual office, industry, education, and commercial working conditions that include noises, interruptions, equipment, telephones, and visitors. This position requires that an employee be able to sit or stand for extended periods of time. May perform cognitive and psychometric work for more than six (6) hours a day. Work may require transporting materials up to twenty-five (25) pounds. Work safely.
