FACULTY VACANCY ANNOUNCEMENT

The Masters in Visual Arts Education Program within the Curriculum & Teaching Department at Hunter College, City University of New York, is seeking a qualified, experienced candidate for the Assistant or Associate Professor of Visual Arts Education position. The intention is to find an established leader in art education for the long-term stability and growth of the Visual Arts Education Program at Hunter College. An established and ongoing trajectory of scholarship in Visual Arts Education is required for the level of Associate Professor and a record of scholarship that will successfully lead to tenure in Visual Arts Education is required for the level of Assistant Professor. 

The successful candidate will be responsible for directing the program. This includes, among other related duties, teaching graduate-level courses, designing and implementing curricula, maintaining program accreditation, fostering and maintaining relationships with partner schools, and advising students. Relevant teaching experience in PreK through 12 public schools and teacher education settings is required as well as a doctoral degree in Visual Arts, Education, or a related field. Experience in urban teaching contexts is a plus. The Department of Curriculum & Teaching seeks candidates who are committed to culturally responsive-sustaining pedagogy, curious about the role of technology in education, and dedicated to the project of public schooling. 

Major Responsibilities 

The successful candidate will be expected to teach graduate courses in the Department of Curriculum and Teaching, Hunter College School of Education. The workload is 21 contractual hours (this can take the form of teaching courses or other credit-bearing work for the program) for each contract year. The successful candidate will demonstrate knowledge of diversity, equity, inclusion, and accessibility issues in education, advise and work with students to support their success, supervised fieldwork, practicum, and student teachers, and work in professional development schools. 

Faculty are required to provide service and participate in the affairs of the department, School of Education, College, and University, including but not limited to program coordination, committee work, and curriculum development, and participate in ongoing program review and accreditation. In addition, the successful candidate will be expected to engage in cross-departmental and/or cross-college collaborative projects.

Approximately 1 of every 8 New York City teachers are trained by our School of Education. 

Visual Arts Education Program Profile: 

The Hunter College School of Education offers two master’s degree programs for New York State certification for visual arts teachers. These programs focus on practical approaches to the teaching of visual arts education, while also providing graduate coursework in the foundations of education and in general education curriculum and content in grades PreK-12. Both programs lead to New York State certification in Visual Arts PreK-12. 

QUALIFICATIONS

Relevant teaching experience in PreK through 12 public schools and teacher education settings is required as well as a doctoral degree in Visual Arts, Education, or a related field. COMPENSATION

Assistant Professor: $93,134 – $99,532

Associate Professor: $100,329 – $117,805
