The Flight Paramedic demonstrates advanced critical thinking capabilities in working autonomously and in collaboration with other health care providers in the delivery of care to critically ill patients in diverse and non-traditional settings.

Job Description

  • The Flight Paramedic is actively involved in assisting and training and continuing education of medical crew members.
  • The Flight Paramedic is required to make the decisions for care and appropriate patient destination in conjunction with the Flight Nurse partner while in flight and during patient contact.
  • The Flight Paramedic must maintain training and skills commensurate with flight paramedic duties, equipment operation, and medical guidelines.
  • The Flight Paramedic must assist with continued quality assurance, to include assuring data collection and reviewing of charts for quality improvement.
  • The Flight Paramedic is actively involved in the care of the critically ill or injured patient.
  • The Flight Paramedic is aware of the need to always present a professional appearance. He/she is expected to:

o Act competently and deal with customers in a courteous and respectful manner.

o Always communicate pleasantly and respectfully with other employees

o Follow up on orders and questions promptly.

o Provide business like replies to inquiries and requests.

o Perform all duties in an orderly manner.

  • The Flight Paramedic is responsible for checking equipment, medications, and supplies at the beginning of each shift and end of each flight, to assure that all are immediately available for in-flight use.
  • The Flight Paramedic will perform other tasks and duties as assigned by his/her supervisor.
  • The Flight Paramedic works in conjunction with multiple agencies at the scene of an emergency incident or sending /receiving facility with diplomacy and tact.
  • The Flight Paramedic observes and follows all federal, state, and municipal laws, including, but not limited to, HIPAA, EMTALA, and OSHA guidelines.
  • The Flight Paramedic will maintain all certifications required for this position.

Minimum Qualifications

  • The flight Paramedic must be a currently certified Paramedic in state of operations and must maintain that certification during the entire period of employment with Classic Air Medical, and Intermountain Health.
  • There must be neither restrictions nor encumbrances on the certification to practice as a Paramedic.
  • National Registry preferred.
  • The flight paramedic must have a minimum of three-years of experience with a high-volume service (1600 hours/year minimum each year).
  • The flight Paramedic must maintain certification in the following:
  • Basic Life Support (BLS)
  • Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS)
  • An Advanced Trauma Course, i.e., ATLS, TNCC, PHTLS, BTLS, TNATC, or ATCN
  • Pediatric Advanced Cardiac Life Support (PALS)
  • Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP)
  • FP-C or CCP-C within two years of hire
  • The Flight Paramedic will perform and be responsible for all duties and skills with scope of practice and within state scope of practice protocol.
  • Must weigh less than 215 pounds fully dressed at the time of hire and must maintain that weight. Duty weights consists of flight suit, boots, and helmet.

Physical Requirements:

  • Ongoing need for employee to see and read information, labels, assess patient needs, operate monitors, identify equipment and supplies.
  • Frequent interactions with patient care providers, patients, and visitors that require employee to verbally communicate as well as hear and understand spoken information, alarms, needs, and issues quickly and accurately, particularly during emergency situations.
  • Manual dexterity of hands and fingers to manipulate complex and delicate equipment with precision and accuracy. This includes frequent computer use and typing for documenting patient care, accessing needed information, medication preparation, etc.
  • Expected to lift and utilize full range of movement to transfer patients. Will also bend to retrieve, lift, and carry supplies and equipment. Typically includes items of varying weights, up to and including heavy items.
  • Need to walk and assist with transporting/ambulating patients and obtaining and distributing supplies and equipment. This includes pushing/pulling gurneys and portable equipment, including heavy items. Often required to navigate small and enclosed space, as well as crowded and busy rooms (full of equipment, power cords on the floor, etc.).
  • May be expected to sit or stand in a stationary position for an extended period of time.

The hourly range for this position is listed below. Actual hourly rate dependent upon experience. 

$25.58 – $39.49
