The University of York is seeking a highly motivated PhD candidate to join one of its cutting-edge experimental laboratories for research in stabilisation of laser systems.
The primary objective of this project is to design and implement advanced stabilisation techniques, both active and passive, to control and minimise noise in laser systems. This research will also focus on phase, frequency and time stabilisation of the light emitted from multiple lasers, utilising techniques such as digital signal processing. The project’s broader aim is to explore the applications of these methods in optical communications.
You will have the opportunity to work in one of York’s state-of-the-art experimental laboratories, equipped with the latest instruments and components necessary to facilitate your research. You will be part of a dynamic and motivated team with diverse expertise, providing a collaborative environment that supports the success of the project.
While your primary research activities will take place at the University of York, there may be opportunities to visit relevant research centres for specialised training and collaboration. The experimental nature of the project involves significant work in device control and programming.
Eligibility:
We are looking for enthusiastic candidates with a strong background in physics, engineering, computer science, or related disciplines. Exceptional undergraduate students with demonstrated skills in these areas are also encouraged to apply. The position is open to both national and international students. We encourage applications from candidates who are eager to contribute to groundbreaking research in laser technology.
Academic entry requirements: at least a class 2:1 MSc or MPhys degree in Physics or equivalent degree accredited by an international institution. Applicants with demonstrated exceptional skills at BSc level can also apply.
Start date: As soon as possible but no later than 1 January 2025.
For informal enquiries please contact Dr. Rupesh Kumar (rupesh.kumar@york.ac.uk) or Prof. Marco Lucamarini (marco.lucamarini@york.ac.uk).
