Project.

A PhD studentships is available working on a funded project on the theoretical study of fluoride ion batteries in the group of Prof. Graeme Watson in the School of Chemistry, Trinity College, University of Dublin, Ireland.

Fluoride ion batteries are an emerging battery technology that could one day replace lithium-ion batteries. However, improvements in the performance, in particular the fluoride ion electrolyte are needed. The current project will utilize a multiscale modelling approach to screen and investigate current and potential fluoride ion battery materials. Screening will be utilized to identify potential electrolytes, which will initially be investigated using density functional theory to identify potential key parameters with the most promising going on to further study. Dynamical investigations of the ionic conduction will be performed using a combination of machine learning forcefields and polarized forcefields.

 Tenure

4-year PhD programme with financial support for 4 years (a €22,000 annual stipend (tax-free), PhD student fees and a research consumables budget)

 Specifications

The ideal candidate should have or expect to obtain a first class of 2.1 degree in Chemistry, Physics, Materials Science or a related discipline and should be interested in computational modelling. Experience in theoretical calculations and / or python programming will be an advantage.
