Forum Introduction

The “Peiyang Young Scientist Forum”of Tianjin University aims to provide a platform for young scholars from around the world to exchange academic ideas and explore opportunities for collaboration. Having successfully hosted 15 sessions, the forum has attracted over a thousand outstanding young talents from more than 30 countries and regions. This forum plays a crucial role in supporting the university’s “Peiyang Scholar Talent Program” and contributes to the goal of building a world-class university by gathering global talent.

 

Schedule

This forum will be held in a hybrid format, combining both in-person and online sessions. Tianjin University warmly welcomes scholars with the potential to be selected for the Excellent Young Scientists Fund Program (Overseas) to return to China and attend the in-person event, for which travel expenses will be covered. After the main forum, each school will host its own sub-forum. The schedule for the main forum is as follows:

No registration fees will be charged for the forum. Tianjin University will cover the transportation and accommodation expenses for invited scholars, with specific arrangements made by the respective schools. The maximum reimbursement for travel expenses is 10,000 RMB per person. Please provide the original boarding passes and train tickets when attending the event.

Application Criteria

I. Applicants for the Excellent Young Scientists Fund Program (Overseas) should meet the following criteria:

  1. Comply with the laws and regulations of the People’s Republic of China, possess good scientific ethics, and conscientiously embody the spirit of scientists in the new era.
  2. Born on or after January 1st , 1985.
  3. Hold a doctoral degree.
  4. The main research focus shall cover natural sciences, engineering, and related fields.
  5. Between obtaining a doctoral degree and before April 15, 2025, the applicant is generally expected to have held a formal teaching or research position at an overseas university, research institution, or corporate R&D institution, with a continuous work experience of at least 36 months. For those who have obtained a doctoral degree overseas with outstanding achievements, the work experience requirement may be appropriately relaxed.
  6. Have acquired research or technical achievements recognized by peers, and possess the potential to become an academic leader or outstanding talent in the field.
  7. Applicants who have not yet returned to work in China full-time or who returned to work in China on or after January 1, 2024, must resign from their overseas positions or have no employment overseas upon receiving the funding notification. After receiving the funding notification, the recipient must resign from overseas work and return to China to work full-time for at least 3 years.

 II. Restrictive Requirements

Adhere to the requirements of central authorities regarding the coordinated integration of national science and technology talent plans. Individuals at the same level of the national science and technology talent plan can only undertake one project and are not allowed to apply for projects at a lower level.

Specific Support and Benefits for the Excellent Young Scientists Fund Program (Overseas)

  1. Position: Appointed to a full-time faculty position at the rank of full professor.
  2. Compensation Package: An annual pre-tax salary of approximately 690,000 RMB (excluding around 80,000 RMB in insurance contributions by the university), with additional performance-based research incentives (indirect costs from national research projects can be used for performance rewards). Beneficiaries will also enjoy unique tax benefits and special subsidies.
  3. Research Funding: 2-6 million RMB (the university provides 1:1 matching funds based on the funding received).
  4. Relocation Allowance: 2 million RMB (including support from the government) .
  5. Team Support: During the first employment term, the university will provide 1 Ph.D. student and 3 master’s student positions annually, along with support for hiring 1 assistant.
  6. Children’s Education: The university operates high-quality affiliated kindergartens, primary, and secondary school.
  7. Housing and Healthcare: Tianjin University provides a certain number of transitional housing units for recruited talent at both its Peiyangyuan and Weijin Road campuses. In October 2019, a major construction was officially initiated on a large-scale seismic engineering simulation research facility for a National Major Scientific and Technological Infrastructure.

The university has been approved to construct the Frontiers Science Center in Synthetic Biology, one of the first seven frontier science centers approved by the Ministry of Education in October 2019.
