Mission or Goal of Unit: The mission of the Department of Surgery is the pursuit of excellence in surgical care through constant innovation and education and to provide every patient with the best care. This position resides in the Section of Community General Surgery of the Division of Bariatric and Gastrointestinal Surgery at VCUHS. The primary location of practice will be Community Memorial Hospital in South Hill, Virginia, and the surgeon will collaborate with the main academic medical center, VCU Hospital that is a Quaternary, Level I Trauma Center health care system, in Richmond, Virginia. Community Memorial Hospital has the intent to become a level III trauma center.

Chief Purpose of this position: This position is intended for a junior to mid-level, term, non-tenure track faculty position. The incumbent will provide support at the practice in Community Memorial Hospital, a 70-bed hospital in South Hill, Virginia, as well as will integrate into the existing elective general surgery practice and acute care surgery practice model with the option for critical care coverage as applicable. The practice incorporates community general surgical cases with laparoscopic, robotic, endoscopic capabilities. The faculty member will also support the division of Bariatric & GI surgery and Acute Care Surgical Services with teaching responsibilities at the undergraduate and graduate levels.

Position Responsibilities:

Teaching

The faculty member will have teaching responsibilities as a part of their role in an academic medical center setting. Oversight of residents and fellows as well as instruction in General Surgery and applied anatomy and physiology.

Clinical

Primary clinical responsibility will be in the care of general surgery and low acuity trauma patients at Community Memorial Hospital as well as other VCUHS clinics and operative locations. They will be responsible for the development of an active surgical practice, with the support of the Division and Department’s leadership.

Research

Faculty member may participate in research activities and/or collaborate with others on research projects and endeavors

Required Qualifications:

  • Board Certification or eligibility in general surgery
  • Commitment to teaching and education of medical students and other trainees
  • Ability to work in a complex matrixed environment with a high emotional intelligence
  • Demonstrated experience working in and fostering a diverse faculty, staff, and student environment or commitment to do so as a faculty member at VCU

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Teaching experience at the undergraduate or graduate level
