Program Director, General Surgery Residency Program

Assistant/Associate Professor of Surgery

The Yale School of Medicine Department of Surgery seeks an individual with demonstrated commitment to creating an inclusive and dynamic learning environment to lead our academic community. This faculty position will be a full-time position at the Assistant or Associate Professor level.

The Yale General Surgery Program Director collaborates with senior Yale University School of Medicine and Yale-New Haven Health System leaders as well as clinical and administrative leadership across multiple service lines, departments, and hospitals to execute a cohesive strategy that aligns with the Yale Department of Surgery’s mission, vision, and organizational plan.

The Program Director has the leadership responsibility and accountability for the operation of the general surgery residency program, including compliance with requirements, in accordance with the Common Program Requirements of the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) and with the Yale-New Haven Health Graduate Medical Education Office. 

The position maintains accountability for compliance with policies and procedures including, but not limited to resident recruitment and selection, duty hours, evaluation and promotion of residents, supervision of residents, and disciplinary action. The position also serves as the primary advocate for residents within consideration of the Yale Department of Surgery and its programs and policies. The position serves to provide flexibility to the trainees to achieve success regardless of what they desire in a surgical career with the foundation of the training program being their development as an independent and skilled surgeon, both in and out of the operating room.

The major responsibilities of the Program Director are defined and described by the ACGME in the Common Program Requirements. In addition, the Program Director partners with the Department Chair, the Vice Chair of Education, the Division Chiefs, the Associate Program Directors, Site Directors, and Program Directors of other Departments on all matters pertaining to trainee working and learning environments. The Program Director also partners with the Clerkship Director and other faculty leaders at Bridgeport Hospital and West Haven Veteran’s Administration Hospital programs to ensure compliance with program requirements in interactions between trainees, medical students (where present) and faculty. The Program Director will partner with Associate Program Directors to provide leadership and strategic delegation of educational leadership roles and access of trainees to faculty leadership regardless of training site. The Program Director plays a key role in the program planning and development and in meeting the education goals of the Department. Essential duties and expectations include:

Leadership and Oversight:

  • Administer the General Surgery Residency Program in accordance with ACGME Common Program Requirements and institutional policies.
  • Implement strategies to enhance the reputation of the General Surgery Residency Program, including fostering relationships with key stakeholders and promoting program achievements, while continuously monitoring and tracking progress longitudinally, particularly in terms of match rates and the success and career outcomes of program graduates, to inform ongoing program improvements and maintain competitiveness in the field.
  • Maintain accountability for compliance with resident recruitment, selection, duty hours, evaluation, promotion, supervision, and disciplinary action.
  • Partner with Department Chair, Vice Chair of Education, Division Chiefs, Program Directors, and System Leaders on matters pertaining to trainee working and learning environments.
  • Collaborate with Clerkship Director and faculty leaders in Undergraduate Medical Education (UME) programs to ensure compliance with program requirements.

Committee Leadership

  • Chairs the Program Evaluation Committee.
  • Serves as or appoints the Chair of the Clinical Competency Committee (CCC).

Faculty Development

  • Partner with the Vice Chair of Education to ensure faculty development opportunities in accordance with ACGME expectations and to ensure optimal training environments for residents.
  • Partner with the Vice Chair of Education and the other educational leadership to appoint individuals that oversee all components of the residency program such as didactics, career development, skills development, research initiatives, and assessment/feedback.
  • Provide documented evaluations and feedback to faculty.

Collaboration

The Program Director, while bearing primary responsibility and accountability for the operations of the General Surgery Residency Program, will also collaborate with multiple other training programs within the Department of Surgery as well as across the School of Medicine on joint initiatives and shared resources.

Responsibilities

  • Maintain a system of meaningful bidirectional assessments by the faculty and residents
  • Collaborate with evaluators and clinical leaders to ensure timeliness and utility of evaluations
  • Review duty hour compliance of residents, determine areas of non-compliance and ensure compliance
  • Collaborate with the Associate Program Directors and the faculty to select incoming interns. The Program Director will be available and free of clinical responsibilities on interview days.
  • Participate in the Clinical Competence Committee and the Program Evaluation Committee
  • Collaboration with the Associate Program Directors in the long-term planning and day-to-day management of the program

  • Rotation assignments and on-call schedules
  • Remediation of low-performing residents
  • Interactions with affiliated and integrated training programs

YNHH GME committee

  • Collaboration with training sites
  • Other matters pertaining to the education mission of the Department including undergraduate medical education, educational outreach, and continuing medical education.

Time Commitment

  • To carry out these responsibilities, and to develop and implement a vision for the program, a portion of your effort will be devoted to GME program leadership.
  • Funding source: YNHHS GME will fund 50% of your effort.
  • Your performance in this role will be evaluated every three years. Reappointment, professional time devoted to the position, and salary support will be determined by the Chair and the Vice Chair of Education.

Reporting Structure

  • The Program Director reports to the Vice Chair of Education and the Chair of Surgery and works closely with other training programs within the Department of Surgery and across the School of Medicine.

Qualifications

Qualifications

Medical:

  • An active member of the Full-time surgical faculty
  • Current certification in Surgery from the ABS
  • Current licensure and appointment to the medical staff
  • Substantial clinical experience in the field of General Surgery is crucial.
  • Well-versed in the latest surgical techniques and practices.

Teaching:

  • Demonstrated skill as a surgical educator
  • Strong interpersonal and effective communication skills
  • Ability to foster a positive learning environment.
  • Scholarly interest and productivity in surgical education pedagogy and research

Leadership:

  • Leadership skills for the management of the surgical training program, including administrative tasks, curriculum development, and mentorship of residents.
  • Strong organizational and administrative skills for managing schedules, evaluating residents, and overseeing program compliance
  • Familiarity with ACGME regulations
  • Experience with accreditation processes and regulatory compliance.
