Job Description

Purpose of Role:

The Head of People & Culture will play a central role in shaping the working life and experience of everyone at Nottingham Playhouse. You will lead and develop our People & Culture strategy, ensuring we continue to attract, support, and retain brilliant staff and freelancers while cultivating a positive, inclusive and resilient culture where people feel valued and empowered.

Acting as a trusted adviser to the Executive Team, Senior Management Team and Board, you will help guide organisational change, strengthen our culture, and enhance our reputation as a truly great place to work. You will ensure our people practices, systems and policies are robust, forward thinking and legally compliant, enabling managers and teams to do their best work with confidence.

From workforce planning and policy development to complex people matters, safeguarding and wellbeing, you will champion the values that define Nottingham Playhouse and support the organisation to grow, evolve and thrive

Duties include:
HR leadership, strategy and culture
Develop and deliver a People & Culture strategy aligned with Nottingham Playhouse’s mission and business plan, in collaboration with the COO.
Provide expert people advice and insight to the COO/ CEO, Artistic Director, SMT and Board.

With the COO, lead on workforce planning and succession planning to ensure resilience.

Establish measurable KPIs (e.g, diversity, engagement, turnover, absence) and report progress to leadership, funders and the Board.

Be a visible, approachable and supportive presence for staff at all levels, including annualised, zero-hours and casual teams.

Promote and embed a positive, inclusive, and psychologically safe culture across the organisation.

Lead on organisational change projects and help managers to plan and implement them.

Regularly benchmark the People offer against peers and the wider theatre sector to ensure competitiveness and best practice

Job Requirements

We are seeking an experienced, strategic HR leader with substantial senior-level generalist expertise who can shape and deliver a forward-thinking People & Culture agenda within a complex, creative organisation.

The successful candidate will demonstrate strong knowledge of employment law, employee relations and organisational development, alongside a proven ability to advise senior leaders, influence decision-making and lead change.

You will be confident managing complex casework, developing inclusive policies and embedding best-practice people processes that support wellbeing, engagement and performance.

Exceptional communication, coaching and relationship-building skills are essential, as is the ability to work collaboratively with managers, staff and freelancers.
