Minimum Qualifications
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Four years of experience working as a WIC Clinic Nutrition Educator or in patient care; OR
Twelve semester hours in food and nutrition or dietetics plus three years of experience working as a WIC Clinic Nutrition Educator or in patient care; OR
An associate’s degree in nutrition, dietetics, human ecology, family and consumer science, health promotion, pre-medicine, or nursing plus two years of experience working as a WIC Clinic Nutrition Educator; OR
A bachelor’s degree in nutrition, dietetics, human ecology, family and consumer science, health promotion, pre-medicine, or nursing.

This Health Educator is assigned to the Madison Parish Health Unit and also travels to the Richland Parish Health Unit. Reports administratively to the Public Health Nutritionist 5.
ESSENTIAL TASKS – PHYSICAL AND MENTAL REQUIREMENTS
This Health Educator position is assigned to the Madison Parish health Unit of the Office of Public Health and functions in the Special Supplemental Food Program for Women, Infants and children (WIC) to assist WIC participants in acquiring nutrition knowledge, skills, and behavior necessary for achieving adequate diets.
Serves as a Certifying Professional Authority (CPA) for the Louisiana WIC Program by providing certification services to applicants. Certification includes performing a nutritional assessment to include evaluation of anthropometric measurements, lab values and nutritional, medical and social histories resulting in determination of eligibility for the WIC program.
Determines nutritional requirements and provides appropriate nutrition education based on nutritional assessment. Develops care plans and monitors progress of participants for future intervention. Prescribes food packages based on nutrition assessment and Nutrition Risk Codes assigned. Provides Breast Feeding support for all WIC prenatal and breastfeeding participants.
Promotes breast feeding to WIC applicants and the community. Interprets state policy and procedures regarding the federally funded supplemental Women, Infants & Children Nutrition Program (WIC). Refer clients to other services, such as physicians, food assistance programs, and high-risk counseling and works closely with these professional to make sure participant needs are met.
Documents and performs the data entry to facilitate WIC services.
Prints the WIC benefit package as prescribed and maintain security for the benefit as mandated by policy.
Performs anthropometrical measurements on WIC clients as necessary to facilitate the certification process.
Provides technical assistance and in-service training to Health Unit staff in the area of computer data entry (PHAME) as it pertains to WIC services.
Conducts monthly outreach by networking with other service providers to develop and implement information/referral systems to identify eligible patients and introduce them to the WIC program. Participates in routine policy training as federally mandated by the WIC program.
Assist with answering phone calls about questions or problems regarding the WIC program.
Attend required continuing education to maintain current nutrition knowledge.
Performs other duties as assigned.
