Summary About the Position: This position is situated in the North Atlantic Baltimore Division, the Environmental and Munitions Design Center (EMDC), Radiological Safety Office. The mission of the EMDC is to provide district program and project management; design management; and field oversight for Hazardous Toxic and Radioactive Waste (HTRW) and Military Munitions (MM) projects executed by Baltimore District. In addition, the EMDC serves as a regional HTRW Design Center. Responsibilities Serve as a Health Physicist for the North Atlantic Baltimore (NAB) District Environmental and Munitions Design Center (EMDC). Responsible for the overall technical management, control, coordination, and execution of Radiological, Environmental and Military Munitions projects. Review and study radiation related documents to ensure accuracy and compliance with USACE, Federal, State and Local regulations. Assess the level of risk associated with the radiation hazards of operations and projects that are restoring site conditions for unrestricted radiological release. Communicate with contractors, users, sponsors, outside reviewers, representatives of base commanders, or others to ensure that there is a full understanding of the scope of work. Provide general surveillance of radiation safety activities, including personnel, facility and environmental monitoring, ensuring contractor’s implementation complies with applicable regulations. Additional information about transcripts is in this document. Basic Requirement for Health Physicist (1306): A. Degree: Bachelor’s degree (or higher degree) in natural science or engineering that included at least 30 semester hours in health physics, engineering, radiological science, chemistry, physics, biology, mathematics, and/or calculus. OR B. Combination of Education and Experience: Courses, as shown in A above, plus appropriate experience or other education. OR C. Certification: Certification as a health physicist by the American Board of Health Physics, plus appropriate experience and other education that provided an understanding of sciences applicable to health physics comparable to that described in paragraph A. In addition to meeting the basic requirement above, to qualify for this position you must also meet the qualification requirements listed below: Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes; 1) Providing technical health physics expertise in all areas; 2) Reviewing established procedures to assure proper precautions are prescribed for the safety and health of employees and recommend changes when necessary; and 3) Applying health physics principals to the investigation and remediation of contaminated sites. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-12). Some federal jobs allow you to substitute your education for the required experience in order to qualify. For this job, you must meet the qualification requirement using experience alone–no substitution of education for experience is permitted. NOTE: Certification as a health physicist by the American Board of Health Physics is desired. You will be evaluated on the basis of your level of competency in the following areas: Health Physics Oral Communication Risk Management Technical Competence Time in Grade Requirement: Applicants who have held a General Schedule (GS) position within the last 52 weeks must have 52 weeks of Federal service at the next lower grade or equivalent (GS-12). Education FOREIGN EDUCATION: If you are using education completed in foreign colleges or universities to meet the qualification requirements, you must show the education credentials have been evaluated by a private organization that specializes in interpretation of foreign education programs and such education has been deemed equivalent to that gained in an accredited U.S. education program; or full credit has been given for the courses at a U.S. accredited college or university.
