GS-07: $55,383 – $71,999 GS-05: $44,709 – $58,118 Responsibilities You will serve as a HEALTH PHYSICIST in the HEALTH PHYSICS BRANCH (CODE 105.52) of the RADIOLOGICAL CONTROL OFFICE located in KITTERY, ME. You will design, develop, implement and maintain complex dosimetry processing instrumentation and associated software and procedures for various types of routine and unusual dosimetry occurrences. You will investigate, resolve, document, and review circumstances surrounding unusual dosimetry occurrences. You will provide troubleshooting and technical assistance for the Automated Radiological Controls Management Information System (ARCMIS) at the Shipyard and satellite locations. You will provide training and mentoring of standard issuing operations of radiation dosimetry devices by Shipyard personnel to employees and visitors in accordance with written Shipyard instructions. Requirements Conditions of Employment Qualifications GS-07: In addition to the Basic Requirements for this position, your resume must also demonstrate at least one year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the GS-05 grade level or pay band in the Federal service or equivalent experience in the private or public sector. Specialized experience must demonstrate the following: Experience applying knowledge and understanding of the theory, principles, and practices of Health Physics. Experience identifying sources of radiation and radioactivity that might be encountered in the Shipyard (e.g., radiography, calibration sources, etc.). Experience understanding how to use computer software, prepare reports, conduct analyses, and ensure environmental compliance. Experience applying a basic knowledge and understanding of reactor, plant, and nuclear ship design and operating characteristics. GS-05: Applicants who meet the Basic Requirements for this position are fully qualified for the GS-05 grade level. Successful completion of a bachelor’s degree in natural science or engineering that included at least 30 semester hours in health physics, engineering, radiological science, chemistry, physics, biology, mathematics, and/or calculus. OR Combination of education and experience — courses as shown above, plus appropriate experience or other education; or certification as a health physicist by the American Board of Health Physics, plus appropriate experience and other education that provided an understanding of sciences applicable to health physics comparable to that described above. When combining education, qualifying experience must demonstrate the following: Experience applying a basic knowledge and understanding of the theory, principles, and practices of Health Physics. Experience identifying sources of radiation and radioactivity that might be encountered in the Shipyard (e.g., radiography, calibration sources, etc.). Experience understanding how to use use computer software, prepare reports, conduct analyses, and ensure environmental compliance. Experience applying a basic knowledge and understanding of reactor, plant, and nuclear ship design and operating characteristics. Education BASIC REQUIREMENTS: (A) Degree: natural science or engineering that included at least 30 semester hours in health physics, engineering, radiological science, chemistry, physics, biology, mathematics, and/or calculus. OR (B) Combination of education and experience — courses as shown in A above, plus appropriate experience or other education; or certification as a health physicist by the American Board of Health Physics, plus appropriate experience and other education that provided an understanding of sciences applicable to health physics comparable to that described in paragraph A. A transcript must be submitted with your application to verify basic requirements. There are no educational substitutions for basic requirements. Basic requirements are required for this position. However, the following are educational substitutions for specialized experience. GS-07: Successful completion of 1 year of graduate-level education OR Superior academic achievement GS-05: No educational substitution. *NOTE: College Transcripts from an accredited University MUST be submitted to show proof the applicant meets ALL education requirements e.g., Basic. NOTE: Education and experience may be combined for all grade levels for which both education and experience are acceptable. Additional Information This announcement uses the Defense Industrial Base, Major Range and Test Facilities direct hire authority to recruit and appoint qualified candidates to certain positions in the competitive service. Vacancies filled from this announcement may be filled at any grade level listed. If selected below the full performance level, you may be noncompetitively promoted to the next higher grade level after meeting all regulatory requirements, and upon the recommendation of management. Promotion is neither implied nor guaranteed. This position is subject to work an uncommon tour, including nights, weekends, and holidays to meet mission requirements. Overtime or night differential pay and/or unusual duty hours may be required. The incumbent may be required to work overtime, rotate shifts, work weekends/holidays, and to work odd shifts and odd work-weeks (e.g., Tuesday through Saturday or Sunday through Thursday). Work occasionally requires extended hours of work or alternate shifts to support maintenance and work operations on the Shipyard, as well as off-yard travel to support mission operations. Duties may require moderate amounts of standing, walking, climbing and bending to inspect and surveil ships, dry docks and facilities within the Shipyard. The work is performed in an office environment as well as in the field. Trips to ships, dry docks, facilities, etc., require wearing of safety shoes, safety glasses, and a hardhat. Earplugs are required under certain conditions. The incumbent may be assigned to work areas where certain potentially harmful physical and chemical agents are present. These agents may include fumes, dust, noise, heat, ionizing and non-ionizing radiation, chemicals, etc. To ensure employee safety and health, the Shipyard maintains personnel protection programs consistent with applicable laws and regulations. These programs may include engineering controls, training, work procedures, use of personnel protective equipment, and medical surveillance. This position is covered by the Department of Defense Priority Placement Program. Several vacancies may be filled.
