About the School

Nord Anglia International School Abu Dhabi is e a UK curriculum day school enrolling students from Early Years to Year 13 in the city’s prestigious residential district Al Reem Island, next to the Sorbonne University campus. Our new school will has the capacity for 2,600 students upon completion. Its first phase of development, openeded September 2023, included the Early Years building and sports facilities, while the second phase opening in Summer 2024 will include the main Primary and Secondary classrooms.

About the role 

As a Higher Level EAL Teaching assistant, you shall support pupils with EAL needs across the school and contribute to raising the educational achievement of these pupils by working in sustained collaboration with curriculum and inclusion teams. For this particular position, we are looking for someone who has a specialism in either – German / French / Spanish. This posotion is to begin in August 2024.

Higher Level EAL Responsibilities

  • Develop and maintain assessment and evaluation systems, demonstrating the effectiveness of strategies and value for money for the school.
  • Prepare and evaluate appropriate learning materials which support the development of EAL.
  • Maintain existing resources and explore opportunities to develop new resources for students with EAL.
  • Keep abreast of good practice and new approaches in teaching methods, curricular development and statutory requirements through reading relevant documents, attendance at meetings and professional development activities and disseminating this information within the school.
  • Advise on appropriate strategies for developing EAL for individual students.
  • Work in collaboration with the SEN team where appropriate.
  • To teach EAL lessons/courses to groups of up to 12 students.

General Learning Support Responsibilities

A. Supporting the pupil

  • Developing knowledge and understanding of the needs of the pupil.
  • Aiding the pupil in learning as effectively as possible, both in group situations and individually, inside and outside of the classroom. For example by:
  • Clarifying and explaining instructions,
  • Ensuring the pupil is able to use necessary equipment,
  • Motivating and encouraging the pupil/s,
  • Assisting in areas of specific weakness such as English vocabulary and sentence structure
  • Helping pupil/s to concentrate on and finish work set,
  • Developing appropriate resources to support the pupil/s,
  • Assisting in the management of pupils’ social interactions and behaviour.
  • Assisting in the assessment of progress of students who are supported.
  • Establishing a supportive and trust-based relationship with the pupil concerned and assist the child to develop some responsibility for their own learning and progress.
  • Establishing acceptance and inclusion of the pupil in the classroom and work where necessary with other pupils to help integrate those being supported.
  • Managing cross-over EAL/AEL students as advised by the SENCO
  • Using methods of promoting / reinforcing the pupils’ self-esteem such as praise, encouragement and recognition of progress or achievement.
  • Ensuring the safety of the pupil in their care.

B. Supporting the Class Teacher and SENCO

  • Assisting the EAL Lead Teacher in developing a suitable programme of support and then carry out the programme, within the classroom or in a withdrawal situation.
  • Working within and help maintain the school’s system of recording and monitoring of pupils’ progress.
  • Providing feedback about pupils’ difficulties and/ or progress to the SENCO
  • Writing reports about the pupil/s’ progress as requested by the SENCO
  • Participating in the evaluation of the support programme and be available, if required to attend case conferences with parents.
  • Helping to adapt/ find differentiated materials to enable pupil to access the class curriculum and sharing these resources at department level.
  • Reporting any problems about arrangements or any incidents to the SENCO.

C. Supporting the school

  • Where appropriate, fostering links between home and school.
  • Liaising, advising and consulting with other members of the Inclusion team.
  • Contributing to review meetings, as appropriate.
  • Participating in relevant professional development.
  • Being fully aware and supportive of school policies and procedures.
  • Maintaining confidentiality about home- school / pupil- teacher/ school work matters.
  • Completing any other related task as directed.

The ideal candidate will have:

  • Previous experience as an EAL Teaching Assistant
  • A specialism in German, French, or Spanish
  • High level of international and inter-cultural understanding
  • High level of fluency in written and spoken English

Ideally, candidates will already be based in the UAE.
