POSITION SUMMARY

The English and Second Language (ESL) Teacher will provide introductory, intermediate, and/or advanced instruction for non-native English language learners; create and manage an engaging learning environment; provide opportunities for small groups; peer-to-peer interaction, and activities that include reading, writing, and speaking English. The incumbent will incorporate technology in class, using appropriate instructional websites and software, and implement lessons aligned with College and Career Readiness Standards while incorporating soft skills and life skills based on Georgia Best content and real-life application of skill set.

  • Bachelor’s Degree required.

WORK EXPEREINCE:

  • 1 (one) year in adult literacy and/or education, experience working with non-native English language speaking, and experience working with diverse groups preferred.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES

  • Highly skilled in classroom and time management
  • Highly skilled in written and oral communication.
  • Demonstrated ability to utilize pre-test scores (Data Reporting Corporation Report) to develop targeted instruction for students, devise student learning plans based on pre-test scores, and prepare students for post- testing.
  • Demonstrated ability to plan, develop, and implement lessons that require the use of higher-order thinking skills.
  • Demonstrate ability to organize and manage district-wide assessment
  • Demonstrated ability to work with collaborative teaM
  • Demonstrated ability to apply critical thinking skills in rendering solutions to various issues quickly
  • Demonstrated ability to utilize proper English grammar.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES

  • Promote the adult education program to public and private organizations throughout the program’s service delivery area.
  • Utilize and assign online resources (Aztec, Essential Ed suite, ENGEN, etc.) to support skill proficiency and test preparation.
  • Teach using a variety of modalities; integrate technology.
  • Devise standard-based lesson plans that include reading, writing, and speaking skills; implement soft skills and real-world application skills training.
  • Provide effective classroom management that enhances student learning.
  • Participate in the local Exceptional Adult Georgian in Literacy Education (EAGLE) competition.
  • Provide opportunities for small groups and peer-to-peer interaction and activities.
  • Monitor student data weekly in the Georgia Adult Learner Information System (GALIS Reports – AE095, AE214).
  • Provide post-testing updates and post-testing preparation.
  • Provide referrals to Career Services for academic, career, and wrap around services as needed.
  • Assist with recruitment and retention activities.
  • Monitor student learning plans and asynchronous work.
  • Evaluate students’ ongoing progress and performance in attaining goals and objectives and document in GALIS.
  • Prepare students to transition to Adult Basic Education classes.
  • Teach Adult Education classes that consist of reading, math, science, social studies, and/or language skills based on the individualized learning needs of students.
  • Provide projected High School equivalency testing and High School equivalency test preparation utilizing appropriate online software.
  • Prepare and transition students to GED Prep instruction when appropriate.
  • Complete and maintain appropriate attendance and assessment records and ensure timely submission (daily) of data for national reporting system input.
  • Communicate with appropriate staff/faculty for students’ testing needs in a timely manner. Review post-test scores, practice test scores and GED/HiSET (High School Equivalency Test) test scores.
  • Coordinate and provide appropriate student referrals for Integrated Education and Trainings, wrap around service, Highs School Equivalency Testing, credential scholarships and testing, and transition services.
  • Collaborate with the leadership team (Program Assistant, Data Manager, Instructional Lead, and Transition Specialist).
  • Required to have prompt, regular attendance in-person or virtually and be available to work on-site, in-person during regular business hours, and as needeD.
  • Performs other duties as assigned by an appropriate administrator or their representative.

Upper Body Mobility: Ability to use hands to grasp and manipulate small objects; manipulate fingers, twist and bend at wrist and elbow; extend arms to reach outward and upward; use hands and arms to lift objects; turn, raise, and lower head.

Strength: Ability to lift, push, pull and/or carry objects which weigh as much as 15 or more pounds on a frequent basis.

Environmental Requirements: Ability to encounter constant work interruptions; work cooperatively with others; work independently; work indoors.

Mental Requirements: Ability to read, write, understand, interpret and apply information at a moderately complex level essential for successful job performance; math skills at a high school proficiency level; judgement and the ability to process information quickly; learn quickly and follow verbal procedures and standards; give verbal instruction; rank tasks in order of importance; copy, compare, compile and coordinate information and records. Understand how to manage stress

Additional Work Conditions & Physical Abilities: Will require travel to multiple sites.

COMPENSATION

Salary Grade: $25.00 per hour

Salary Range: APS Salary Schedules

Work Days: As needed (Not to exceed 29 hours weekly)
