Job Summary

The House Steward is primarily responsible for monitoring the House and its collection, answering queries, assisting visitors and enforcing the DSH Guest Rules. The House Steward will also complete basic cleaning duties and the setting up and closing down of exhibits.

Our House Stewards are based at Dennis Severs’ House, 18 Folgate Street, Spitalfields, London, E1 6BX.

Dennis Severs’ House is a unique immersive art installation and performance space created at the tail end of the 20th century by American artist Dennis Severs’ within a 18th century Huguenot master weavers’ house in Spitalfields.

Remuneration: is £13.15 per hour.

Job Description:

1.To be responsible for the setting up of candles, scents, fireplaces etc. prior to opening and to follow the correct procedures when doing so.
2. To be responsible for completing and following correct closing procedures.
3. To be familiar with the displays and tableaus within DSH, and with the DSH story.
4. To follow and complete a basic cleaning rota.
5. To monitor and maintain candles and fireplaces while the House is open using the correct procedure.
6. To monitor the house to ensure that the objects on display are safe and secure at all times.
7. To manage visitors’ use of the space and enforce the DSH Guest Rules.
8. To be familiar with products sold in the DSH shop and help visitors with purchases when necessary.
9. To attend relevant meetings and training when required.
10. To be aware of and work in line with all risk assessments.
11. To be compliant with Health and Safety legislation, ensuring all procedures are adhered to.
12. To carry out any other reasonable requests in line with the broad responsibilities of the role.
13. To maintain and deliver a high standard of appearance and customer service.

Job Requirements

– You have previous experience of working in a customer facing role.

– You have excellent communication and time-keeping skills.

– You have an interest and knowledge of history.

– You have a good command of spoken English.
