​​​​​The ICES Secretariat is now inviting applications for a temporary parental leave cover in the role of Advice Department Professional Officer.

As a Professional Officer, you will play a vital role strengthening the technical and scientific input to ICES advisory work, including the development of new products and deliverables. This role is key to supporting the implementation of goals set out in the ICES Advisory Plan. To excel in this role, you should possess strong analytical skills related to quantitative fish stocks assessment methods and have proven experience in project management. It is furthermore essential to have a solid understanding of underlying data needs, the integration of ecosystem and environmental drivers in stock assessment as well as the translating of science into advice.

This short-term position based in Copenhagen, Denmark offers a unique opportunity to join our dynamic and collaborative international team. As a member of the close-knit Advice Department team of 21 colleagues, you will work with all levels of the ICES community and engage with a wide network of international scientists, industry representatives, and policymakers. This position will play a valuable role in contributing to the development of scientific advice for fisheries and ecosystem management policies.

Main Responsibilities

  • Assist with the production of advice and work across the Secretariat on wide ranging integrated and strategic issues (Advice, Data, and Science departments) with particular focus in elasmobranchs and Baltic fish stocks
  • Support the ICES advisory work in respect of fisheries advice including the coordination of benchmarks
  • Support ICES advisory processes related to bycatch of endangered, threatened and protected species in line with the ICES Roadmap for bycatch of endangered, threatened, and protected (ETP) species
  • Support ICES advisory processes related to Ecosystem Overviews, in particular to the Oceanic Northeast Atlantic and Icelandic Waters in 2025-2026. Assist and coordinate the inclusion of new science into the Overviews and contribute to the consistency and integration with other advisory products (i.e. Fisheries overviews and Aquaculture overviews)

Qualifications and Experience

We seek a scientist with extensive work experience in quantitative stock assessment, with strong fisheries background, or related environmental sciences, and the following qualifications:

  • A degree from a recognized university in a marine related science discipline or mathematics/statistics or similar qualifications
  • At least five years’ professional experience, from relevant research and/or an international organization relevant to marine science
  • Experience in scientific analysis of fisheries data and quantitative fish stock assessment method
  • Knowledge of the main international fisheries and ecosystem related policies
  • Strong attention to detail, computer literacy and programming skills
  • Ability to work in a team, and with people from diverse national and cultural backgrounds

Terms of Appointment

The appointment will be full-time (38 hours per week, including lunch breaks) for a one-year contract period starting date for this position is 1 April 2025, or as soon as possible.

The salary is situated at the “P1” grade, which is based on but not identical to the United Nations common salary system. Furthermore, a tax-free pension scheme is available in which the employee contributes 7.9% of pensionable salary and ICES contributes 15.8%.

ICES Secretariat staff enjoy privileges and immunities pursuant to the Host Agreement between the Government of Denmark and ICES. The salaries of ICES staff are exempt from Danish income tax and are based on, but not identical to, UN salary grade scales. Furthermore, you will be enrolled in a tax-free pension scheme to which both the employee and ICES contribute. The ICES Staff Rules set out the conditions of employment and the responsibilities of Secretariat staff.
