IL-5 Medical Lead, Respiratory Medical Affairs

Job Purpose

The Medical Lead role is a unique opportunity for an experienced, innovative, and proactive medical professional to facilitate the understanding of the value of our medicines and vaccines, the science behind them and the public impact they can offer. This is accomplished by jointly developing and implementing the global medical strategy by providing clear guidance on strategy based on local care gaps and priorities identified during local situation analysis.

The Medical Lead for IL-5 (Nucala/Depemokimab) is accountable for overall medical strategy of a key asset and achievement of the tactical objectives. This role is critical to the overall success of the asset and in ensuring patients benefit from our advancements. They are responsible for ensuring strategic alignment with Commercial and Global Medical. The position will lead directly and indirectly, a Medical Matrix Team responsible for developing and executing multiple Medical affairs Strategic and tactical plans. They will work in a thriving team of medical business leaders where people will be inspired to drive towards achieving our goals of getting Ahead of Disease Together and positively impacting patient and population health outcomes globally.

Key Responsibilities

• Accountable for all medical activities for IL-5 at a local level driving effective alignment and synergy across multiple indications’ medical plans and activities where applicable
• Extensive partnership and collaboration with global and regional teams within medical affairs and cross-functionally to build understanding of local landscape, market value drivers, unmet medical needs and clear communication on timelines required for success
• Jointly accountable for developing the global medical brand strategy and plans for IL-5
• Partner across the internal ecosystem and with external partners to deliver on medical plans that prioritise patient impact
• Leveraging insights and learnings, inputs into the design of clinical trials and development plans to optimize the positive impact for patients
• Represent medical in local cross-functional strategy meetings and workshops, and proactively offer options for innovative medical strategy

As a core member of the Global Medical Team (GMT)

• Actively participate and input to the GMT, the primary medical governance for IL-5 (Nucala/Depemokimab)
• Support the definition of data gaps and development of a data generation strategy by ensuring local data needs are incorporated and heard
• Develop and ensure execution of global medical strategy for a product through the product’s lifecycle by integrating Japanese environment and voice of the customer
• Provide focused support at key inflection points during development

As responsible for product plans at the local level

• Support on local planning for successful launch of the product and provide input into Japanese overall medical plan
• Gathering insights on local HCP and patient need to inform a cross-functional product strategy
• Leads appropriate local scientific engagement between GSK and external communities in order to advance scientific and medical understanding including the appropriate development and use of our products, the management of disease and patient care
• Accountable for maintaining deep product and disease area expertise, and maintaining a deep understanding of patient and physician interactions and clinical decision making and impact. May include accountability of other medical staff for execution of work and people development
• Lead the cross-functional Medical Matrix Team to tailor / adapt global strategy for Japanese specific customer needs and environment
• Play and active role within local TA to articulate and implement a single, unified medical strategy across the portfolio in market
• Responsible for launch and product development at the local level including local data and content needs for the product, indication expansion strategy in market etc.
• Applies sound medical governance for all activities and is accountable for medical governance oversight and sign off for all asset indications

Proven leadership skills and strength in people management: Experienced at managing, developing and motivating a team to deliver results in a timely manner and at pace. Track record in leading an organization to achieve improved levels of performance and the ability to communicate a compelling vision, which will generate enthusiasm and commitment for the organization. He/she is skilled at hiring, assessing and developing individuals with a track record of improving performance and experienced in setting high performance standards and measures, driving accountability throughout the function and mentoring staff. Reputation for leading with high integrity and strong ethic, with GSK values clearly role modelled.

A collaborative and team-oriented style: Collaborative, team-oriented approach. Effective at developing and supporting relationships broadly across an organization as well as with key external stakeholders and the healthcare community at large. Experience being an active contributor and influencer across cross-functional teams and/or working in highly matrixed organizations will be essential. He/she must also demonstrate flexibility to adapt to changing demands.

Results orientation. Demonstrated strong process and planning skills to secure complex mandates and a track record of delivering results on time and within budget to satisfy multi-stakeholder expectations while acting with integrity and professionalism. He/she should demonstrate a strong work ethic and commitment to taking accountability and ownership for their area of responsibility.

Governance: In-depth knowledge of GSK’s SE Principles, Promotion, Codes of Practice, ABAC, Operating Practices and their interpretation/application in real-life settings. Must be conversant in JPMA and MHLW guidelines as well as Japan GCP and Clinical Trial regulations

• Experience in the Pharmaceutical industry with specific experience leading a team with progressively more senior positions and responsibility
• Medical TA experience within pharmaceutical industry
• Understanding of Pharmaceutical ethics and governance; and a clear understanding of pharmaceutical compliance policies and procedures
• Basic financial and budget management
• A demonstrated understanding of local healthcare environment, including knowledge of health technology assessments and market access challenges
• Prior experience with new product launches
