Job Title: Instructional Coach – Middle School English Language Arts and Reading/Social Studies (No regularly assigned classes) (In Anticipation of Future Openings)

(This position primarily serves as instructional support without the regular assignment of classes.)

Reports to: Campus Principal 

Dept/School: Teaching and Learning / Assigned High School 

Work Year: 184 Days

Base Salary: Teacher Pay Scale + Stipend 

PRIMARY PURPOSE:

Assist with closing the student achievement gap and accelerate learning for all students by building teacher capacity through job-embedded professional learning.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Education/Certification:

Bachelor’s Degree

Master’s Degree preferred

Secondary Teacher Certificate in English Language Arts and Reading (ELAR) or Social Studies 

ESL Certification – preferred for ELAR

Special Knowledge/Skills:

Strong knowledge of current curriculum and instructional strategies

Effective collaborator

Knowledge of effective planning protocols

Experience:

Minimum three years of secondary teaching experience preferred

Campus leadership experience preferred

Experience facilitating professional learning preferred

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES:

Under the direction of Teaching and Learning leadership and supervision of the campus principal:

Support and provide training and coaching to improve student learning and achievement.

Support others in building their teaching skills.

Assist in application of new knowledge.

Provide ongoing learning and sustainment.

Increase the overall quality of effective content instruction.

Support department teacher teams in instructional planning processes and instruction aligned to the four critical questions of a professional learning community.

Lead learning with the primary purpose to support, guide, and lead educators and teams of educators to positively impact learner achievement.

Collaborate with campus/District leaders and colleagues in order to promote continuous improvement at the classroom level, ensuring high levels of learning for all students.

Support the implementation of quality core instruction by developing teacher understanding of state and course specific standards, FISD curriculum, and current instructional practices.

Support, communicate, and model district priorities.

Assist District and campus administration in identifying areas for growth.

Collaborate regularly with content coordinator and campus supervising administrator to ensure coaching impacts student performance.

Collaborate with Teaching and Learning staff to design and lead professional learning.

Facilitate informal, job-embedded professional learning in an ongoing basis at the District and campus level based on District, campus, and department goals.

Support teachers in implementing strategies from professional learning into the classrooms through ongoing interaction, reflection, and continuous improvement efforts.

Support teachers and teams to provide high levels of learning for all students with guidance from the Teaching and Learning department.

Foster trusting relationships with staff and build a positive culture within the department.

Assist in implementation of evidence-based teaching strategies in classrooms.

Assist teacher teams in interpreting formative and summative assessment data, and in using assessment information to adjust instruction.

Collaborate with teams in the use of structured reflection to create targeted action steps that lead to personalized student learning opportunities.

Exhibit non-evaluative growth mindset and utilize coaching skills to help teachers and teams evaluate progress and set action steps for continuous improvement.

Exhibit a high level of ethics and confidentiality in regard to student and teacher records and classroom performance.

Attend professional learning sessions to increase coaching skills; these may occur during the school year or summer.

Attend district instructional coach meetings with Teaching and Learning.

Collaborate actively as partners between General and Special Education ICs, ESL teachers, etc., and facilitate collaboration for department teachers.

WORKING CONDITIONS:

Instructional coach is a full day role. The expectation is that the instructional coach supports and grows collaborative teams several times a week; supports the campus professional learning plan; meets regularly with the campus principal and/or the Teaching and Learning team; works one-on-one with teachers in improving instruction; and regularly reviews learner and campus data and assesses performance.

Mental Demands/Physical Demands/Environmental Factors:

Maintain emotional control under stress; flexibility to meet the needs of staff members in their department. Duties are physically demanding, including moving between rooms and moving small stacks of textbooks; organizing, storing, and distribution of content specific materials; and moving media equipment, desks, and other classroom equipment.
