This is a grant-funded position and is contingent on availability of funds.
Position Purpose
Builds capacity of teachers across the District in Social Studies content areas through professional learning, coaching, and in classroom support for Emergent Bilingual (EBs) with curriculum, instruction, assessment, and student-centered, equity driven instructional practices. Supports teachers in campus differentiation of curriculum and content planning for EBs. Engages in data-driven conversations to support student and teacher growth. Provides guidance/support for campus personnel related to the state and federal assessment of EBs. Collaborates with campus administrators in the alignment of campus instructional practices to increase student achievement and campus outcomes/goals for EB students. Creates, presents, and supports presentations for professional development offerings in support of EB students in collaboration with the content area Executive Director and Content Coordinators. Supports curriculum development in Social Studies as well as other instructional initiatives. Builds capacity for the support of language acquisition at campuses in order to improve outcomes and student achievement through Social Studies instructional support. Focuses on supporting the highest needs campuses as an equity strategy designed to improve outcomes of our most marginalized students and communities.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
Instructional Leadership and Coaching
- Build capacity of teachers by providing coaching, professional learning, and in-classroom support specifically tailored to Social Studies content.
- Collaborate with campus instructional coaches and leadership teams to support teachers in delivering standards-aligned, linguistically accommodating Social Studies lessons.
- Provide observation, feedback, modeling, and co-teaching opportunities to support teachers’ instructional needs, particularly for EB students.
- Facilitate data-driven conversations with teachers to support student growth and improve Social Studies instructional practices.
Curriculum and Assessment Development
- Collaborate on the development and refinement of curriculum and assessments in Social Studies to ensure alignment with district goals and equity initiatives.
- Lead the integration of effective educational resources into the Social Studies curriculum to enhance instructional delivery.
- Support the district’s state and federal assessment requirements for EB students within the Social Studies content area.
Professional Learning and Development
- Design and deliver professional learning based on the instructional needs of teachers, especially in Social Studies and EB strategies.
- Collaborate with Content Coordinators to plan and implement districtwide professional learning initiatives that address identified trends and goals.
- Engage in reflective practices to continuously improve professional learning offerings and instructional support.
Collaboration and Communication
- Collaborate with other content area coaches, content coordinators, and campus administrators to ensure alignment of Social Studies instructional practices across the district.
- Facilitate the communication of district goals and Social Studies instructional priorities among district staff, campuses, and classrooms.
- Provide targeted instructional support to the highest needs campuses as part of the district’s equity strategy.
Record Keeping and Documentation
- Maintain accurate and timely documentation of coaching and support activities, utilizing district-provided platforms.
- Monitor and evaluate the impact of Social Studies instructional support on student achievement and teacher growth.
Growth Mindset and Continuous Improvement
- Demonstrate a growth mindset by building strong relationships with teachers and engaging in self-evaluation to improve coaching practices.
- Reflect on and adjust instructional strategies to ensure continual growth and development.
- Demonstrates a growth mindset in working with and building strong relationships with teachers.
- Facilitates the differentiation of core content curriculum in support of EL students.
- Collaborates with teachers on planning and preparing standards-aligned, linguistically accommodating lessons.
- Collaborates with campus instructional coaches and campus leadership team to support teachers with instructional strategies to best benefit EB students.
- Support teachers with instructional needs for EB students specific to the content area through observation/feedback, modeling, co-teaching, coaching and professional learning.
- Debriefs and conducts professional conversations with teachers regarding instructional delivery.
- Collaborates with other Content Area Coaches and Content Coordinators across the Teaching and Learning organization.
- Maintains accurate and timely records to document support.
- Attends department meetings, trainings, and professional learning as assigned.
- Responds promptly to telephone and email inquiries from campus staff and central administration.
- Maintains cooperative and professional working relationships with peers, students, administration, and other school/district employees.
- Supports curriculum and assessment development as assigned.
Safety
- Performs preventative maintenance on tools and equipment and ensures equipment is in safe operating condition.
- Follows established safety procedures and techniques to perform job duties including lifting and climbing; operates tools and equipment according to established safety procedures.
- Corrects unsafe conditions in work area and promptly reports any conditions that are not immediately correctable to supervisor.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
- Strong knowledge of Social Studies curriculum development, instructional strategies, and assessment practices.
- Expertise in planning and delivering professional learning and instructional support, particularly in Social Studies and EB strategies.
- Ability to build capacity among teachers and coaches to improve instructional practices in Social Studies.
- Strong communication and collaboration skills to work effectively with district leaders, campus administrators, and teachers.
- Proficiency in using data to drive instructional decisions and improve student outcomes.
Travel Requirements
- Travels to school district buildings and professional meetings as required.
Physical & Mental Demands, Work Hazards
- Tools/Equipment Used: Standard office and instructional equipment, including computer, peripherals, and Promethean Board.
- Posture: Prolonged sitting and standing; occasional stooping, squatting, kneeling, bending, pushing/pulling, and twisting.
- Motion: Frequent repetitive hand motions, including keyboarding and use of mouse; occasional reaching.
- Lifting: Occasional light lifting and carrying (less than 15 pounds).
- Environment: Works in an office or classroom setting; may require occasional irregular and/or prolonged hours.
- Attendance: Regular and punctual attendance at the worksite is required for this position.
- Mental Demands: Maintains emotional control under stress; works with frequent interruptions.
Minimum Required Qualifications
- Education:
- Bachelor’s degree from accredited college or university required;
- Major in Education, a Content Area, or a related field to subject being taught required;
- Master’s degree from accredited college or university preferred.
- Certification/License:
- Valid Texas Teaching Certification required;
- House Bill 3 Texas Reading Academy certification preferred (if not certified, must complete certification within the first year of hire as aligned with the requirements of HB3 TRA);
- ESL or Bilingual Certification preferred.
- Experience:
- 4 years’ teaching experience in Social Studies required;
- Experience with diverse student population, especially in a large multicultural urban district preferred;
- Experience facilitating or presenting professional learning preferred;
- Experience as an instructional coach, department head, team lead, grade level-lead, Lead Content Teacher, or school leader preferred.
- Language: Bilingual working proficiency (English/Spanish) required.
