The Opportunity
Embry-Riddle is now hiring an Instructor of Aviation English at the Daytona Beach Campus. This 10-month non-tenure track faculty position is a joint appointment with ERAU’s Department of Flight and Embry-Riddle Language Institute. This is a multi-faceted position with a primary role of providing English instruction to international students who have not yet met the minimum English language proficiency for academic study as well as international flight students who have not met the FAA Aviation English Language Standards to begin flight training.
Responsibilities include:
- Teaching and teaching related administrative responsibilities:
- Two Department of Flight FA135 classes during fall, one class during spring and summer semesters at scheduled times AND teach two ERLI classes as assigned during fall, spring, and summer semesters at scheduled times.
- Organize instructional planning according to objectives in the ERLI & Aviation English for Flight Training Curriculum.
- Oversee the continuous improvement of courses to strengthen their content, to include coverage of all curricula.
- Complete and submit syllabi, course plans, diagnostic & final exams, Early & Midterm Alerts, and other required documents by due dates.
- Keep attendance records daily online.
- Keep grade records and report grades weekly.
- Assess student academic progress on an ongoing basis through the use of sufficient and appropriate measures.
- Keep office hours and tutor current students as needed.
- Provide academic advisement for students including, but not limited to, help with issues with coursework, academic intervention, and success strategies.
- Contribute positively to student success and student service in philosophy, attitude, and performance.
- Participate in required meetings.
- English for Flight Training Assessment (EFTA) Test
- Complete administration work related to the English for Flight Training Assessment test.
- Rate tests for the English for Flight Training Assessment test.
- Assist Aviation English Coordinator with the ongoing development of English for Flight Training Assessment test.
- Aviation English Program (AEP) within the Flight Department
- Tutor flight students who need additional assistance with Aviation English by appointment or in the Aviation Learning Center.
- Assist Aviation English Coordinator with learning objectives, design strategy, for Aviation English courses.
- Assist Aviation English Coordinator with development of new course and curriculum for office of professional education and Flight department.
- Professional Development
- Participate in professional development as outlined in the ERLI Professional Development Policy
- Participate in professional development in the field of Aviation English.
- Perform other duties as assigned by the Aviation English Coordinator and the ERLI Director
About the Department
Embry-Riddle Language Institute (ERLI) is a CEA accredited intensive, English for academic purposes program. ERLI’s mission is to provide high-quality English language instruction that prepares speakers of other languages to enter and succeed in Embry‑Riddle Aeronautical University or another U.S. university. ERLI is an academic unit within Center for International Education.
The Department of Flight provides the training for all the programs at the university that require flight training. The department has three buildings, a hangar, and more than 100 aircraft — all high-end, electronically supported models. Facilities also include a bank of simulators that includes the highest level of simulations available anywhere. The department has 200 flight instructors, plus 40 technicians performing support and maintenance in the hangar.

Qualifications
Required Education: Bachelor’s Degree in Aviation or closely related field, and a Master’s Degree in Applied Linguistics or a related field.
Required Qualifications:
- Comfortable using computer technology for administrative and teaching purposes, including learning management systems, virtual meeting platforms, and other online tools.
- Minimum of one year of experience teaching at the college level, in a US-based Intensive English Program (IEP).
- Experience teaching Aviation English, with a strong understanding of the specific language and communication needs of pilots and aviation professionals.
- Experience in second language assessment, with knowledge of best practices for assessing language proficiency and developing assessment tools.
- Native or near-native oral and written English fluency, with excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
- Extremely proficient with Microsoft Office Suite, especially Excel, with the ability to use spreadsheets to track and analyze data.
- Preferred Qualifications:
- FAA Private Pilot Certificate or higher
