Position: Intern Pharmacist
What You’ll Do: As an Intern Pharmacist, you will perform the duties of a pharmacy technician or pharmacist under the direct supervision and control of a pharmacist, in compliance with federal, state, and local laws and regulations. This role is designed to provide the intern pharmacist with the experiences necessary to become proficient in the practice of acute care inpatient pharmacy. Projects and assignments will offer opportunities to further develop and demonstrate skills.

- Current enrollment in an accredited School of Pharmacy, or
- Graduate of an accredited School of Pharmacy within the last 6 months with an application submitted to take the California exam to become a pharmacist
- Licensures/Certifications:
- Current California State Board of Pharmacy Intern Pharmacist License in good standing.
- LA City Fire Card certification (to be obtained within the first 30 days of employment)

Specific Responsibilities:
- Knowledge and Understanding:
- Obtain and maintain appropriate knowledge and understanding of the Hospital and the Department of Pharmacy, including an overview of the department, the content of the department’s training program, and other topics as determined by their supervisor.
- Maintain a working knowledge of the general chemical and physical properties of drugs handled in the pharmacy department, including identifying medications that are light-sensitive, require refrigeration, are caustic, or poisonous. Use reference books and website references for stability information or material safety data sheets.
- Maintain a working knowledge of all aspects of pharmacy services, including medical terminology and abbreviations, drug names and classifications, medication order and prescription interpretation, medication computer order entry, and pharmaceutical calculations.
- Medication Handling and Processing:
- Filling medication orders for a pharmacist to check, Omnicell loading and unloading, refills, outdates, troubleshooting, and discrepancies.
- Repackaging, labeling, manufacturing, handling, and storing pharmaceuticals.
- Processing charges and credits for medications.
- Documenting controlled substance use.
- Controlling medication inventory.
- Perform various functions associated with an institutional drug distribution system, including preparation of medications, completion of dispensing records, procedures for record-keeping and dispensing of controlled substances, investigational drugs, non-formulary drugs, antineoplastic agents, and delivery and exchange of medications.
- Equipment and Facilities:
- Using and maintaining equipment and facilities.
- Restocking floor stock and various specialty kits and trays.
- Operate automated technology (e.g., Omnicell cabinets, Euclid packaging machine, computers) in accordance with policy, procedures, and manufacturer instructions.
- Aseptic and Compounding Techniques:
- Follow aseptic technique and preparation procedures for adult, pediatric, and neonatal sterile dosage forms.
- Perform aseptic compounding of parenteral admixtures and other sterile dosage forms, including proper procedures for preparing all types of parenteral admixtures (excluding chemotherapy), preparation of labels and control records, proper techniques for visual inspection of parenteral solutions, and documentation of quality control.
- Compliance and Safety:
- Comply with federal and state laws governing the practice of pharmacy and the distribution of controlled and non-controlled substances, medication error prevention methods, compounds, packages, and labels drug products as needed.
- Understand, implement, and comply with the National Patient Safety Goals.
- Calculations:
- Perform calculations required for usual dosage determinations and solutions preparation using weight and volume equivalents in the metric system.
- Purchasing and Inventory Control:
- Perform essential functions related to drug purchasing and inventory control.
- Clinical Protocols:
- Participate in clinical protocols such as aminoglycoside and vancomycin monitoring, pharmacy drug level reporting, and anticoagulation monitoring, all under the direct control and supervision of a pharmacist.
- Team Interaction and Training:
- Participate in the training and orientation of new pharmacy employees.
- Interact effectively with other members of the health care team regularly.
- Patient Rights and Confidentiality:
- Maintain honesty and attentiveness to the rights of patients.
- Maintain confidentiality of patient information.
- Order Processing:
- Triage orders, determine priorities, process orders, and notify the pharmacist as appropriate.
- General Duties:
- Perform other tasks as assigned.
Work Environment:
- Setting: Primarily indoor building/office environment, well-lighted and ventilated, with possible multiple work sites.
- Pace: Fast and continuous work pace with a variable workload.
- Interactions: Frequent contact with staff and public under varied circumstances. Requires clear communication in English, both verbally and in writing.
- Interruptions: Subject to interruptions from calls, inquiries, and potential emotional situations.
- Emergency Situations: Handles emergencies/crisis situations according to hospital policy.
- Travel: Occasional travel may be required.
- Hazard Exposure: Potential exposure to chemicals, flammable materials, gases, electrical/radiant energy, or equipment with/without moving parts.
Physical Demands:
- Continuous (66 to 100% of time): Standing/walking, fine motor activities, near vision, hearing, and verbal communication.
- Frequent (33 to 65% of time): Reaching above shoulder level, forward bending, twisting, squatting, and kneeling.
- Occasional (0 to 32% of time): Sitting, climbing, lifting/carrying up to 25 pounds, repositioning/transferring patients up to 200 pounds, pushing gurneys, wheelchairs, and other medical equipment.
