As part of our continued development, Cardiff University School of Psychology has an open-ended lecturer vacancy. We are a large, diverse and internationally leading School with highly rated teaching and research.

The post is available full-time or part-time (in multiples of 0.2FTE to a total of 1 FTE). We are particularly looking for individuals with expertise or interest in the following teaching areas:

  • Clinical Psychology, Mental Health and Health Psychology.

For the T&R pathway, we aim to complement and extend our research and impact strengths in directions aligned to national and international challenges (as identified by research funders, such as NIHR), enabling successful candidates to build, lead and sustain research groups and new collaborations, as well as providing engaging teaching and academic leadership. For example, candidates can consider how they might align with and link between our research centres or other areas of strength (see http://psych.cf.ac.uk/). All lecturers also provide or support some teaching beyond their specialisms, for example in research methods or supporting tutorials.

This post is up to 1 FTE (35 hours per week), fixed term for 3 years and available immediately.

Salary: £40,497 – £45,413 per annum (Grade 6). Appointments to roles at Cardiff University are usually made at bottom of scale unless in exceptional circumstances.

Job Description

Main function

To contribute across the breadth of research, teaching, and knowledge transfer and engagement activity. To advance and disseminate knowledge in your subject area, and to contribute to taught courses, research supervision, administration and leadership. The roles will entail a balance between research, teaching and other duties that support the life of our School community of students and staff, as well as the wider University.

  • To conduct research within Psychology and contribute to the overall research performance of the School and University by the production of measurable outputs including bidding for funding, publishing in national academic journals and conferences and/or other research outputs, and the recruitment and supervision of postgraduate research student
  • Where appropriate, to translate research outcomes into impact beyond the academic sphere, and to build and maintain links with external agencies and networks.
  • To develop research objectives and proposals for own or joint research including research funding proposals.
  • To give conference/seminar papers at a local and national level.
  • To participate in School research activities.
  • A clear strategic vision for future development that aligns to important challenges in the field and would benefit from the environment in Cardiff University.

Teaching

  • To design and deliver teaching programmes for courses and contribute to module development as part of a module team
  • To carry out other forms of scholarship including work associated with examinations (setting and marking paper and providing constructive feedback to students), administration, participation in committee work, and the pastoral care of students of Cardiff University and develop skills in assessment methods and in providing constructive feedback to students.
  • To inspire undergraduate and postgraduate students under the guidance of a mentor / module leader and develop skills in assessment methods and in providing constructive feedback to students.
  • To supervise the work of students including the supervision of Undergraduate and Master’s students and the co-supervision of PGR’s
  • To act as a Personal Tutor and provide pastoral support to students

Other

  • To engage effectively with industrial, commercial and public sector organisations, professional institutions, other academic institutions etc., regionally and nationally to raise awareness of the School’s profile, to cultivate strategically valuable alliances, and to pursue opportunities for collaboration across a range of activities. These activities are expected to contribute to the School and the enhancement of its regional and national profile.
  • To undergo personal and professional development that is appropriate to and which will enhance performance in the role of Lecturer.
  • To participate in School administration and activities to promote the School and its work to the wider University and the outside world.

Qualifications and Education

  1. Postgraduate degree at PhD level in a related subject area or relevant industrial experience

Knowledge, Skills and Experience

  1. An emerging record of international journal publications and/or other outputs and achievements of the highest esteem within and beyond the field, demonstrating an established expertise and a promising portfolio of research in an area relevant to the School of Psychology.
  2. Teaching experience at undergraduate/postgraduate level and ability to engage students and contribute to the leadership and continued development of teaching and supervision across the School’s teaching programmes
  3. Ability to demonstrate potential in obtaining competitive research funding, as a principal investigator or as part of a team where your role is clearly identified, to build and maintain a productive research team – Proven ability to be successful in competitive research funding
  4. Motivation and proven ability to support colleagues and students to enhance a positive working environment and to help our continued improvement and development (all grades), including a willingness and ability to take responsibility for academically related administration and leadership (as appropriate for level).
  5. Enthusiasm, self-motivation and resilience to adapt to the changing requirements of the Higher Education community, with a creative, innovative, team-working attitude.
