Since 1957, EIRENE – International Christian Peace Service has been working in partnership with organizations committed to nonviolent conflict transformation as well as to socially just and ecologically sustainable change. EIRENE enables volunteers and peace workers to engage in international peace services in Europe (including Germany), the Americas, and Africa. On its path to becoming a racism-critical organization, EIRENE relies on committed members and staff who develop visions for non-violent coexistence from a variety of perspectives, that help to shape personal and structural changes to overcome all forms of discrimination in a non-violent way. EIRENE is recognized by the Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) as a development service in accordance with § 2 EhfG as a sending and implementing organisation within the Civil Peace Service (CPS), the weltwärts and the International Youth Volunteer Service. In Germany, EIRENE’s work focuses in particular on combating racism and promoting social cohesion.

Within its Uganda Civil Peace Service (CPS) Programme, EIRENE partners with civil society organisations to implement the project “Men and Women in Refugee and Host Communities Working Together for Gender-Equitable and Peaceful Coexistence.” One of the four current partner organisations is Joint Effort to Save the Environment (JESE). For the past 31 years, JESE has worked in diverse communities, many of which face socio-economic challenges, displacements (refugees), land-related tensions, and environmental degradation. JESE envisions a community where people and nature flourish, with a mission of facilitating people centred innovative actions that foster equity, sustainable management of natural resources and livelihood improvement.

JESE seeks to strengthen its institutional capacity and integrate conflict sensitivity and peacebuilding approaches across its programs and operations. To enable this work, EIRENE and JESE are seeking for an

International peace worker focusing on conflict sensitivity and innovative peacebuilding approaches

Your tasks

• Work with JESE as a team member to strengthen institutional capacity for conflict-sensitivity in environmental and local economic development activities.
• Build the skills of the JESE CPS project team and others in creative conflict transformation approaches, mediation, and conflict-sensitive planning, implementation, and monitoring—especially in settings where natural resources are under pressure and economic opportunities are limited
• Support the project team in implementing community-based peacebuilding activities linked to environmental protection and local economic development in both host and refugee communities, while acknowledging local knowledge systems and existing strategies.

Your profile

• A university degree (Master’s or equivalent) in Peace and Conflict Studies, Development Studies, International Relations, or a related field.
• At least three years of professional experience in peacebuilding, conflict transformation, and/or institutional development, ideally in East Africa or similar contexts.
• Experience working with civil society organisations, the private sector, or local community structures.
• Solid experience in designing and facilitating trainings and learning processes using participatory methods.
• Strong communication and reporting skills, with experience supporting processes in diverse contexts.
• Excellent English skills; knowledge of Kiswahili or other locally spoken languages is an asset.
• A reflective, power-aware, and culturally sensitive understanding of one’s own role and position.
• A solid understanding of different forms of racism and their impact on international cooperation.
• Willingness to work under sometimes basic living conditions and to travel frequently to rural areas

What we offer

• A three-year contract or based on the Development Aid Workers Act, including individual preparation in Germany (with the possibility of extension)

• The place of assignment is the Fort Portal; with regular trips to the Kyaka II Settlement (Kyegegwa District); the location is family-friendly, but there are no schools offering an international curriculum.
