Under the supervision of the Medical Officer-in-charge, the clinical officer (RH) will offer quality maternal and newborn health care to all patients in the hospital and work closely with other staff in maternity department providing support and guidance.

Key Responsibilities

Program Activities:

  • Conduct daily ward rounds in the maternity.

  • Ensure patient management is in line with the set MOH, WHO and UNHCR guidelines and protocols.

  • Attend to all maternal and newborn health emergencies.

  • Ensure proper and accurate documentation of patient management in patient in the EMR.

  • Assist in surgical procedures such as elective and emergency obstetric cases.

  • Operate the special high risk pregnancy outpatient clinic.

  • Recommend timely referrals for both obstetric/gynecological related Emergency and elective cases to secondary and tertiary care centers

  • Organize and facilitate targeted RH related Continuous Medical Education (CME) sessions within the department.

  • Take lead in ensuring the work improvement teams (WITs) are institutionalized and are working.

  • Perform obstetric ultrasounds.

  • Attend and participate in the daily morning hospital handover and bi-weekly hospital meetings.

  • Participate in maternal and perinatal mortality and near-miss audits to improve quality of care for patients.

  • Participate in the periodic Quality of Care Assessments

  • Conduct periodic and scheduled skills gap assessments for maternity nurse/midwives and provide targeted supportive supervision/coaching on maternal, newborn, sexual and reproductive health competencies.

Reporting and Coordination:

  • Assist in preparation of periodic progress reports as requested by the HM.

  • Monitor closely the maternal and newborn health related morbidity and mortality trends to ensure that prompt actions are taken.

  • Work with the maternity team to ensure maternity specific MPDSR action points are tracked and actioned in time.

Others

  • Carry out other relevant duties as may be required or assigned by your supervisor.

  • Quality of care in the maternal and newborn health service

  • Ensure quality emergency obstetric and newborn care in maternity ward.

  • Prompt referral of patients

  • Proper documentation of patient care in the EMR.

Qualifications

  • Diploma in clinical medicine from a recognized institution

  • Higher diploma in reproductive health from a recognized institution

  • Must be registered with clinical officer council of Kenya and have a valid practicing license.

Required Experience & Competencies:

  • Knowledge of good clinical practice concepts

  • Excellent training, supervision, and facilitation skills

  • Excellent planning, organization, and interpersonal skills

  • Excellent communication skills (writing, reading, and presenting) in English and Swahili

  • Basic computer application skills (MS word, excel, power-point)

  • Self-driven and a team player, flexible and culturally sensitive

  • At least 3 year of reproductive health related working experience in a busy hospital.
