Overview
An exciting opportunity exists for the position of Lead of Research Data with the Data Science team in the George & Fay Yee Centre for Healthcare Innovation (CHI) at the University of Manitoba. The successful candidate will take a leadership role in research, collaborations, and training activities to support the development, linkage, curation, and maintenance of research databases at provincial and national levels.

CHI, a partnership between the University of Manitoba, Shared Health and the Manitoba government, aims to be a catalyst for healthcare providers, healthcare decision makers and health researchers in Manitoba to generate and facilitate the use of knowledge to improve the health of Manitobans. CHI is home to Manitoba’s Strategy for Patient-Oriented Research (SPOR) SUPPORT Unit. The Unit enables and supports patient-oriented research through its key areas of data platform and services, capacity development, patient engagement and research methods and support, all within a learning health system framework. CHI is committed to inter-professional education and collaborative practice, advancing clinical learning and academic healthcare leadership development. Currently CHI has more than 70 full and part time faculty, staff and trainees The Data Science Team, the largest team within CHI, is comprised of more than 20 individuals with expertise and advanced training in biostatistics, computer science, artificial intelligence applications in the health sciences, clinical research, and bioinformatics.

Responsibilities
The Lead of Research Data will be a member of CHI’s Data Science Leadership Team and will also work closely with CHI’s Clinical Trials Team on mutually beneficial projects about the collection, evaluation, and use of clinical trials data.

The ideal candidate is a team-oriented leader and innovator who will oversee a team of database developers, analysts, and technical experts that coordinate the creation, linkage, and evaluation of clinical and related health databases (e.g., health surveys) for provincial, national, and international researchers. The Lead of Research Data will be primarily responsible for the Data Coordinating Centre (DCC) within CHI Data Science. The DCC has an established reputation amongst local, national, and international researchers for creating and maintaining high-quality databases that allow for electronic data capture/entry, as well as activities related to database content management, data quality assessment, and reporting. Databases are primarily developed using RedCap software, and are designed to aid the conduct of patient-oriented health research in the province.

The Lead of Research Data will explore commercial database software and support the creation of customized database solutions to facilitate patient-oriented health research. In addition, this individual will identify new opportunities to introduce best practices and standards for database quality assessment and meta data collection and management.

The Lead of Research Data will also work closely with technical experts and researchers at the Manitoba Centre for Health Policy (MHCP) to plan and support linkage of diverse types of electronic health and social data in the province, including data arising from clinical trials and specialized patient registries. The Lead of Research Data is also expected to liaise with Health Data Research Network Canada, where appropriate, to support the harmonization and standardization of health data, including administrative, registry, survey, and electronic medical record data.

This position requires a commitment to the vision, values, goals, and objectives of CHI and its partners and funders, including the University of Manitoba, Shared Health, Province of Manitoba and Canadian Institutes of Health Research, to promote and maintain a positive, professional, and team-oriented environment.

The incumbent will contribute to high-level technical discussions, participate in visioning activities, and engage in collaborations with individual research and healthcare system clients from the University of Manitoba, Shared Health, Province of Manitoba and industry on their research and healthcare improvement goals and strategies.

This position falls under the Research Academics compensation group, with a salary range of $65,000 – $92,025, commensurate with qualifications and experience.

Qualifications
This position normally requires a PhD or a terminal advanced degree in a quantitative discipline, such as computer science, data science, information science, statistics, biostatistics, or epidemiology. Candidates with an advanced degree and significant experience carrying out independent research may be considered.

The ideal candidate must have at least two years’ experience in leading or supervising a team, and demonstrated evidence of project management skills. The candidate must have experience in the development, management, and/or evaluation of research databases, preferably using RedCap or a related software. Knowledge of methods or approaches for the collection, organization, analysis, and/or visualization/presentation of health research data is required. Experience working in a health research setting is essential.

Strong oral and written communication skills are required. A dedication to research innovation and to working in an interdisciplinary environment is also required.

Experience
• Knowledge of project management approaches and best practices is required.
• Experience in conducting or supporting clinical health research is required.
• Experience in applying artificial intelligence techniques in the health sciences is preferred.
• A commitment to supporting trainees who are conducting health research is preferred.
• Knowledge of database linkage techniques is preferred.
• Knowledge of medical/scientific terminology, medical research regulations and guidelines, and data privacy legislation and best practices is preferred.
