JOB SUMMARY:

Under direct supervision, provides academic support and mentor to their peers. Facilitates student success by offering tutorial assistance, participates in job training, and leads student study groups. Works closely with the Learning Resources team, Student Success Coaches, Tutoring Center Team, and faculty to support students. Encourages independent learning, foster a conducive learning environment, and utilizes various resources to enhance student learning.

SPECIFIC DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Provides academic support and encourage students to become independent learners.
  • Completes Course Embedded Learning Assistant training course. Embedded in gateway courses across the curriculum,
  • Mentors and supports of students in your assigned course.
  • Works with Student Success Coaches, Academic Support Center, and faculty.
  • Cultivates and maintains an environment that is conducive to student learning.
  • Facilitates student study groups in the Tutoring Centers or in other designated areas, i.e., classrooms, computer labs. Work with the Learning Resources team and IRSC faculty and staff to provide tutorial assistance and academic support to IRSC students.
  • Participates in job training/in-service activities to meet the specific duties and responsibilities of the position.
  • Utilizes resources to promote/enhance student learning, i.e., texts, software, IRSC/ Tutoring Centers websites, printed materials. Visit classes to promote the services available in the Tutoring Centers that support student success.
  • Maintains an awareness of current College and department policies and guidelines.
  • Completes all other duties and responsibilities as assigned

QUALIFICATIONS, KNOWLEDGE AND SKILL REQUIREMENTS:

  • Enrollment as a full or part time student at Indian River State College (IRSC) with grades of “B” or higher in tutorial discipline of Mathematics, Science, Health Science, English, Reading, and/or English as a Second Language (ESL)
  • Ability to convey knowledge of tutorial discipline to others in a practical and comprehensive manner.
  • Ability to work independently as well as with others.
  • Ability to recognize and respond to individual differences of students from a culturally diverse student population.
  • Willingness to make students active partners in the learning process.
  • Ability to pay close attention to detail as well as the possession of good judgment and a strong work ethic.
  • Computer proficiency in basic computer applications, such as Microsoft Office and the Internet.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with others both verbally and through written skills.
  • Ability to positively represent the Tutoring Centers.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

This position requires an ability to sit, stand, walk, bend, lift, reach up, stoop, and carry items occasionally in excess of twenty-five (25) pounds. Physical skills required include the ability to lift heavy boxes and materials, to move equipment from room to room, and to work for extended periods at a computer station. It also requires manual dexterity to operate standard office machines, such as, copier, fax, telephone, and other equipment as necessary. IRSC expects its employees to follow proper safety standards while employed by the College.

OTHER EXPECTATIONS:

Enrolled full or part-time at IRSC, maintaining grades of “B” or higher in disciplines such as Mathematics, Science, Health Science, English, Reading, and/or English as a Second Language (ESL).
