FACULTY VACANCY ANNOUNCEMENT

The CUNY School of Medicine (CSOM) at The City College of New York (CCNY), is the only medical school in the City University of New York system. Our innovative curriculum allows students to complete both their undergraduate Bachelor of Science (BS) and Doctor of Medicine (MD) degrees in seven years. CSOM will graduate its first MD class in 2020. CSOM also has a Master of Science degree in Physician Assistant Studies (PA). Our mission is to provide access to medical education to talented youth from social, ethnic and racial backgrounds historically underrepresented in medicine and to develop health professionals committed to practicing in under-served communities with a special emphasis on primary care. As a growing school, our philanthropic areas of growth will be in student scholarships and support to our educational and research missions.

CSOM is seeking Medical Clinical Professors to serve in a non-tenure track position as Medical Student Advisor and Learning Community Facilitator. We will be filling two vacancies. These positions will report directly to the Associate Dean for Student Affairs.

Individuals appointed as clinical professors – medical series are experienced practitioners or teachers in their professions or fields of expertise. The responsibilities of the position include teaching (including, in some cases, clinical instruction), and may include research. Clinical professors – medical series are full- time, non-tenure track positions.

Core duties include but are not limited to:

  • Advise medical students on career choice & residency planning.
  • Provide educational sessions to students about Careers in Medicine.
  • Develop and conduct informational seminars and workshops (such as using the AAMC Careers in Medicine Program) for students to support academic, professional and personal growth including career opportunities and residency choice.
  • Meet regularly with students in one-on-one advising sessions regarding, academic challenges, medical careers, residency choice, fourth year planning and preparing for life after medical school.
  • In conjunction with the Associate Dean for Student Affairs, will meet individually with students and prepare the MSPE for students entering the Residency Match Program during year 7.
  • May serve as co-course director for the required New Student Seminar course (NSS100) that orients new students to the college and to preparation for a career in medicine.
  • May serve as co-course director for a subsequent longitudinal student seminar course called Professional Foundations, which will run in the first year of the program.
  • Teach multiple advising groups and assist in the creation of “advising communities” in the first 3 years of the 7-year program in collaboration with faculty who volunteer to advise the undergraduate students.
  • Serve on various college, medical school and university committees to give input relevant to the role of Medical Student Advisor.

Preferred: Teach advising groups in the medical school portion years 4-7 of the 7-year BS/MD continuum.

QUALIFICATIONS

Bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution and appropriate advanced degree, professional licensure, registration, certification or such other qualifications as may be necessary for the satisfactory performance of his/her duties. Also, must have demonstrated satisfactory qualifies of personality and character, a record of achievements in his/her profession or field of expertise, and a willingness to cooperate with others for the good of the institution.

Required qualifications:

  • Applicants must have MD, PhD or EdD and experience in teaching and advising medical students and/or residents from a wide range of cultures, and academic backgrounds.
  • Applicants should also have demonstrated commitment to building and promoting equitable, diverse and inclusive academic environments and must be willing to contribute to the CSOM’s diversity and inclusion goals.
  • A demonstrated commitment to promoting diversity, inclusion, and multicultural and structural competence in a learning environment.
  • Excellent communication (verbal and written) and people skills as well as excellent presentation skills – diversity
  • Knowledge of and ability to utilize advising practices and principles that inclusively and equitably serve a diverse student population in a variety of settings.
  • Experience teaching in large and small group settings
  • Must have demonstrated satisfactory qualities of personality and character, a record of achievements in his/her profession or field of expertise, and a willingness to work collaboratively with faculty, staff, and students from a wide range of disciplines, cultures, and academic backgrounds for the good of the institution.

Preferred qualifications :

  • Knowledge of learning strategies, inclusive pedagogy, and experience coaching at risk students.
  • Knowledge of medical school and residency requirements regarding curriculum requirement, personal attributes and professional experiences (research, leadership, etc.).
  • Familiarity with MSPE letters and the ERAS match process for residency.
  • Familiarity with the LCME accreditation process.
  • Experience in managing a range of student affair issues.
  • Experience in supporting student academic success, particularly for members of underrepresented groups.
