If this sounds like you, the Museum of Watford would be pleased to welcome your application for our Learning & Engagement Volunteer opportunity!
As well as gaining skills in working with museum collections you will join our friendly volunteer team and be part of an important project to share our collection and research ahead of our exciting move to our new site at the Town Hall.
What will I do?
As a Learning & Engagement Volunteer with us you could help with the following activities:
Helping to run Museum on Tour events with the museum team
Researching objects for information to share with our visitors
Engaging visitors and sparking conversations about the history of Watford and museum objects
Helping to create resources for the Museum on Tour events
Overseeing the handling collections and safety of museum objects at Museum on Tour events
What skills do I need?
We welcome the skills and experience that each of our volunteers brings to the museum. We don’t expect volunteers to have museum experience, but volunteers will find the following skills and experience useful for this opportunity:
Confidence speaking to, and engaging with, a wide range of audiences
Good levels of spoken English (ability to speak other languages also an advantage)
Interest or knowledge of the history of Watford or Museum of Watford
Willingness to be trained in program delivery skills
Training in how to work with museum collections will be provided, as well as the all-important tea and biscuits!
Ideally you will be available for an initial period of 3 months, and we will review the voluntary role at 3 monthly intervals after that.
Job Requirements
No qualifications are necessary, and we hope you will enjoy gaining new skills.
This voluntary role would suit people who:
Are above 18 years of age
Enjoy being part of a team, supporting staff and other volunteers
Have experience (work or life) leading and creating activities for children
Are warm, inclusive, and confident talking to people of all ages and backgrounds
Are enthusiastic and willing to learn about the museum
Are reliable
Are able to undertake tasks with and without supervision
Are willing to undertake training and follow guidelines
Are happy to undertake tasks alone or as part of a close-knit team
Are methodical, with an attention to detail
Are happy using a laptop (e.g. for data entry and research)
Can follow the museum’s guidelines, policies and procedures
Additional skills like experience with a camera/photography, public speaking, research, or arts and crafts, and computing skills are all desirable and very welcome.
