Job Description Summary
The Learning Strategist is responsible for the provision and coordination of professional support services that assist students to maximize their academic performance. They guide student exploration, encourage positive changes to learning and studying practices, and facilitate student success through enhanced learning support experiences. While available to help all students on campus, the Learning Strategist will specialize in supporting unique groups including but not limited to: disabled students; international students; indigenous students; student athletes; and students on academic probation, failed standing, or who have received disciplinary measures related to academic misconduct.
Organizational Status
The Learning Strategist is a member of the Student Development and Advising team and reports to the Senior Manager, Learning Resources. The Learning Strategist works cooperatively as a professional team member and actively participates in and contributes to the development and implementation of educational programs and organizational change initiatives. The Learning Strategist works in collaboration with UBC faculty, staff, and student organizations to achieve common goals.May supervise student staff and volunteers.
Work Performed
The Learning Strategist plays a key role in researching, designing, delivering and assessing learning skills approaches, consultations, and programs for undergraduate students.
Responsibilities include:
Program Management:
¿ develops and delivers programs/strategies to students who need additional academic support to ensure they possess the tools needed to take charge of their own learning
¿ facilitates students understanding of strategies for online learning and helps students to set, meet, evaluate, and achieve academic goals in an online learning environment
facilitates individual and/or group learning consultations to assess barriers to learning, encourage exploration and facilitate positive changes to students studying and learning practices
¿ must be familiar with reading and understanding psycho-educational assessments and implementing positive action plans that support learning skills development
¿ exercises tact, empathy, inclusivity, and cultural sensitivity to assess students learning needs, problem solving difficulties, or challenges and assist them in developing academic learning strategies; works creatively with students who have a broad range of disabilities, clinical diagnoses, mental health, cognitive, and neurological disabilities
¿ works with students to incorporate a learning style suitable to their unique needs, helping them to identify and capitalize on their strengths and compensate for any barriers to learning; designs and delivers specialized support that is tailored to the needs of unique student groups and to build students executive functioning skills
¿ helps students implement strategies along with corresponding technologies in areas such as organization and analytical comprehension, as well as general study and coping skills, including but not limited to critical thinking, assignment planning, and time management
¿ analyzes current practices, research, and strategies to assist students in the development of their learning skills and self-monitoring
¿ builds confidential relationships with students and maintains student records and relevant statistical data in accordance with university policies, procedures, and guidelines
¿ actively markets and promotes learning programs and services and recruits students to participate
¿ researches, designs and develops learning services/resources that meet the changing needs of students in print and virtual formats
¿ coordinates projects and special events related to the work of the unit
¿ performs duties consistent with the mandate of AVP Students and the Student Learning Hub as required
Student Leadership & Mentoring:
¿ participates in the recruitment, hiring and training of student staff
¿ provides ongoing coaching and mentorship to student leaders to ensure they are fully engaged and successful in their Learning Resource roles
¿ supervises student leaders to establish and maintain high quality skills and practices, as well as the exceptional provision of services to students and campus partners
Relationship Building:
¿ works collaboratively with faculty, staff, and other administrators while addressing the learning needs, academic performance, appropriate referral, and retention of students
¿ liaises with academic support services across campus to design and deliver joint programming to address the complex needs of learners and to initiate new pathways of support. These include but are not limited to Aboriginal Programs & Services, the Disability Resource Centre, International Programs & Services, and Athletics & Recreation.
¿ networks with faculty participating in Learning Resource programming to gather feedback, identify content difficulties for students, engage in joint planning, and ensure the integration of shared learning outcomes
¿ promotes awareness and education on matters related to accessibility, executive functioning, and adult learning in post-secondary education
Assessment, Evaluation & Improvement:
¿ participates in the development and implementation of an ongoing assessment plan for Learning Resource programs and services
¿ provides written goals, objectives, and anticipated outcomes for learning programs and services, as well as a measurement plan and annual report
¿ conducts on-going evaluations of learning programs and services and recommends improvements
¿ remains current with relevant scholarly research, issues, trends, theories, and methodologies related to student learning, study skills, post-secondary transition, and retention
¿ works collaboratively within the AVP Students portfolio to ensure learning programs and services are aligned with overall student success and engagement efforts
Consequence of Error/Judgement
Errors in judgment may have negative consequences for the quality of student learning at UBC. They may also result in the inefficient use of resources, and/or poor relations among students, faculty, staff or campus partners participating in educational development activities. They may damage the reputation of AVP Students, the Student Learning Hub, and the University.
Supervision Received
This position acts independently and works with considerable autonomy under the direction of the Senior Manager, Learning Resources. Work is reviewed based on achievement of specific goals and objectives.

This position may supervise student staff and volunteers.
Minimum Qualifications

Preferred Qualifications
Undergraduate degree in a relevant discipline.Minimum of three to four years of related experience or the equivalent combination of education and experience.Training specific to learning strategist qualifications (eg. relevant B.A. or B.Ed. with learning strategist post-graduate certificate) preferred. Minimum of three to four years of related experience or the equivalent combination of education and experience. Experience in the development and delivery of post-secondary learning skills programs and curricula. Knowledge of current learning skills theory, research and issues impacting the transition to university. Experience working with students from diverse backgrounds including students who self-identify as aboriginal, students with disabilities and international students. Knowledge of learning needs, learning strategies, and study skills appropriate for university learning. Demonstrated outstanding oral and written communication skills and the ability to build rapport with students, staff, faculty, and campus partners in a cross-cultural environment. Experience with metacognitive, functional strengths, and limitations of emerging adults with learning disabilities (LD) considered an asset.
