Primary Purpose of Department 

The Chemistry Department is a community of faculty, staff and students dedicated to excellence in education, the engagement of students and faculty in collaborative research at the cutting edge of science, and the sharing of expertise and knowledge to enrich the local, regional, and global communities.

To achieve its vision, the Department of Chemistry has set several interrelated goals:

• To educate undergraduate, master’s and doctoral students and postdoctoral fellows in the discipline of chemistry and provide them with experiential and professional development opportunities that will enable them to contribute to the scientific community and society;
• To extend the frontiers of knowledge through research in chemistry and relevant interdisciplinary areas;
• To increase scientific literacy and develop well-informed citizens through strong support of the University’s General Education program;
• To participate in the University-wide academic community through interdisciplinary programs and collaborations;
• To contribute to the local, regional, national, and global communities through service activities that promote education and the dissemination of knowledge;

The Chemistry Department offers a BA in Chemistry, a BS in Chemistry (ACS Certified), a BS in Chemistry with Biochemistry Option (ACS Certified), a research-based MS in Chemistry, and is a lead department for the PhD in Chemistry and Nanoscale Science.

Description of Work

Thus, the Job Responsibilities and Essential Functions for Non-Tenure Track Faculty should be interpreted in the context of the related departmental and collegiate teaching goals.

Teaching – Faculty responsibilities and essential functions with respect to teaching may include but are not limited to: subject matter competence, course design, course presentation, and grading student work.

Essential Duties and ResponsibilitiesDuties include teaching introductory chemistry courses, with the option of teaching upper-level courses (depending on the candidate’s interests and the department’s needs); and service responsibilities, such as support for departmental curriculum / pedagogy development and serving on department and university committees. Additional duties could include serving as the coordinator of introductory laboratories or courses.

Minimum Experience/EducationUNC Charlotte gives primary consideration to the earned masters and/or terminal degree in the teaching discipline or a related discipline.

Preferred Education, Skills and ExperienceExperience in assessing or researching postsecondary pedagogical practices is preferred. We especially welcome applicants from candidates with experience and interest in utilizing evidence-based scientific teaching and learning practices to foster student success in general education and introductory chemistry courses.
