About the Department:

The Developmental English Department is dedicated to preparing and supporting underprepared students for academic success in college level English using creative course design, technology, and interventions, based on the belief that every student should have the opportunity to pursue their educational goals. 

The Developmental English Department prepares students for college-level work in English. The department offers 2 courses: Basic Reading & Writing non-course-based option, and Integrated Reading & Writing stand-alone course and Integrated Reading and Writing co-requisite course with a first-year Rhetoric and Composition I (RWS 1301). The Developmental English department is very proactive in searching for better ways to make our students successful, not only in our classes, but in their first college-level English course. 

Job Description:

The University of Texas at El Paso seeks a full-time lecturer to teach developmental English courses face-to-face during the day to UTEP students beginning Fall Semester, 2024. The department focuses on inclusive pedagogy and student support to ensure that students are prepared to succeed in college. Developmental English lecturers will be instrumental in facilitating entering students’ path towards academic success. Successful Developmental English lecturers have a genuine commitment to working directly with students, evidenced by experience providing individual student support in academic advising, student success, or other relevant experiences. Employees in this role are expected to:

  • Facilitate student learning through one-on-one tutoring, mentoring and coaching
  • Prepare and deliver curriculum to students with diverse levels of English content knowledge and assess learning outcomes.
  • Provide instruction using technology, such as MindTap for NCBE courses, educational standards of delivery, and a variety of methods of instruction including lectures, groupwork, and individual mentoring as needed.
  • Actively engage students in critical thinking, meta-cognitive processes, and interpersonal skills.
  • Identify and implement, as appropriate, innovative pedagogical practices.
  • Infuse multicultural and diverse perspectives into the instructional process as appropriate and conduct classes in a manner that demonstrates respect for individual and cultural differences.
  • Must be able to teach during the work week, Monday – Friday 8:00 am – 5:00 pm. Some evening classes may be available from 5:00 pm – 6:20 pm.
  • Work collaboratively in a team environment
  • Monitor student academic performance and their persistence term-to-term.
  • Participate in continuous improvement of high-impact practices and pedagogy to increase the quality of course delivery and student engagement.

Requirements:

Master’s degree in English, Creative Writing, Rhetoric and Writing Studies, or Reading or another related field. ESE lecturers are highly motivated instructors with superior interpersonal skills, oral and written communication skills, excellent presentation skills, and experience successfully integrating technology into curriculum and/or pedagogy. Candidates are highly motivated and dedicated to student success. The candidate must have a proven track record of working in a collaborative team environment. Additionally, the ideal candidate has demonstrated the ability to motivate students at the college level and develop a positive mentoring relationship with diverse student populations. 

Preferred Experience:

A Doctoral degree in English or related field, English Education, or Higher Educational Leadership is preferred. Experience teaching developmental English to college students and an understanding of the Texas Success Initiative Assessment (TSIA) and how it impacts placement of students into developmental English are desired. Experience teaching college-level reading and writing is a plus.

Additional Information:

Salary is commensurate with experience and qualifications. Hiring decisions are subject to final budget approval.
