Position description

The English for Multilingual Students Program (EMS) at the University of California, Santa Barbara invites applications for a pool of qualified temporary lecturers for both full-time and part-time positions to teach undergraduate writing courses in EMS for the upcoming openings. Screening of applicants is ongoing and will continue as needed. The number of positions available varies from quarter to quarter, depending on the needs of the program. Positions may range from 33% to 100% time.

The EMS Program offers four levels of undergraduate writing courses, enrolling domestic and international students whose home language is other than English; the majority of students are international. Placement is based on diagnostic essays from the campus English Language Placement Exam (ELPE). Undergraduate course cap is 18 students. All courses offer four units of credit toward degree. Please see our program website (www.ems.ucsb.edu) for more information about these and other courses offered by the program.

Lecturers will teach in-person undergraduate writing courses to multilingual students. Each course requires four instructional contact hours per week, and requires substantial out-of-class preparation and grading. Instructors must also hold a minimum of two office hours per week and meet with individual students as needed to provide assistance on course assignments. Lecturers will also be expected to attend 2-3 scheduled faculty meetings per quarter.

The department is especially interested in candidates who can contribute to the diversity and excellence of the academic community through research, teaching and service as appropriate to the position.

The posting will remain open until March 31, 2024 to accommodate department needs. If you would like to continue to be considered after that time, and the pooled position is advertised again, you will need to submit a new application.

Please note: The use of a lecturer pool does not guarantee that an open position exists at the time you are applying. See the review date specified in UC Recruit to indicate the next potential upcoming opening. If there is no future review date showing, your application may not be considered at this time.
