Lecturer Grade F – £39,347 – £44,263 per annum

Lecturer Grade G – £45,585 – £54,395 per annum

The Role

We are seeking to appoint a Lecturer in Sociology for a full time, fixed period of 12 months (September 2024 to August 2025) to provide maternity cover. You will contribute to the research profile of the Sociology Subject Group in the School of Geography, Politics & Sociology by publishing in internationally recognised journals, demonstrating research impact, and securing external research funding. Additionally, you will develop and deliver programmes in Sociology, ensuring an outstanding teaching experience for our students.

Key Accountabilities

This Lecturer position is designed to provide excellent scholarship, as well as fulfil key teaching and administrative roles in Sociology, in particular:

Teaching & Learning

  • To provide high quality teaching and learning and student support
  • Mentor and support students throughout their studies in the role of personal tutor
  • Set and mark assessment of modules in accordance with University standards and utilise on-line and digitised curricula and education frameworks
  • Contribute to curriculum development
  • Ensure all our students benefit from studying in a research intensive, research excellent academic environment
  • Provide education for life, that engages, challenges and supports our students to discover and fulfil their potential both while they are studying with us and once they have graduated
  • Support modules at undergraduate and postgraduate levels, including SOC8073 Perpetual Wars? Crime, Drugs and Terror
  • Provide undergraduate and postgraduate taught supervision.

Research

  • Conduct research that demonstrates international standards of excellence in terms of originality, signifcance and rigour in the subject area of Sociology of Crime
  • Contribute to the research profile of the school by publishing high quality outputs
  • Pursue external funding
  • Demonstrate impact by developing research-based solutions to real-world problems and engage with external stakeholders to develop the impact of your work
  • Supervise PGR (postgraduate research) students in a research-led university

            Administrative

  • Undertake a range of administrative tasks to support your area of teaching, and/or engagement for example, recruitment
  • Contribute to the wider work of the School, Faculty and University through input to project teams, working groups and committees
  • Operate as an active citizen in the Sociology community
  • Contribute to the schools international, programme and professional body accreditations
  • To have a commitment to equality, diversity and inclusion and ethics, responsibility and sustainability

The Person 

Knowledge, Skills & Experience

Lecturer Grade F

The level of appointment will be determined by your ability to meet the requirements of the person specification as outlined below.

  • Demonstrable research interest in the Sociology of Crime
  • Ability to design and deliver high quality research-led teaching and make effective use of technology, learning materials, resources and activities in line with the Unit’s, School and Faculty teaching objectives to enhance learning
  • Ability to develop and secure research funding
  • Experience of or capability to publish international and world-leading research
  • Ability to engage with external stakeholders, generating real-world impact from research
  • Evidence of developing an international research profile
  • Ability to contribute to student dissertation supervision
  • Ability to provide timely student support, develop, mark and assess student assignments and provide timely feedback to enhance the student learning experience and achievement
  • Ability to provide personal tutoring and pastoral support
  • Ability to contribute to recruitment activities for Sociology degree programmes
  • Ability to use virtual learning environment
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills
  • Excellent organisational, time management and presentation skills
  • Demonstration of successful team working
  • Personal resilience in a context of change and fast paced environment
  • Contribute to the wider sociological internal and external research community e.g. by reviewing journal articles, peer review of research grants, active engagement with relevant research clusters, and membership of professional bodies

Desirable

  • Ability to use online teaching methods
  • Show commitment to knowledge sharing with the private and public sectors, and with civil society, with especial reference to marginalised and disadvantaged social groups 

Lecturer Grade G

In addition to providing evidence of your previous experience of the criteria above, to be considered for a Grade G Lectureship you must also meet the follow criteria:

  • A sustained international/established research and innovation profile and proven track record in international and world-leading publications
  • Evidence of developing and securing grant capture
  • A track record of engaging with external stakeholders, generating real-world impact from research
  • Evidence of effective use of disciplinary and proactive research and a developed international research profile
  • Evidence of your contribution to the Sociology subject Group  
  • Experience of attracting and supervising PGR students
  • Supervision of undergraduate and taught postgraduate students’ research projects
  • Substantial experience of designing and delivering high quality teaching and learning material, resources and activities for students
  • Ability to undertake a management and leadership role
  • Evidence of active citizenship in the Sociology community

Qualifications

  • PhD in Sociology or Criminology (or equivalent) 
  • A good Honours degree (or equivalent) in a relevant subject

Desirable

  • A relevant Professional Body Membership as appropriate to the subject area 
  • HE teaching qualification (or equivalent experience)
