About the Department/College

The Department of Educational Specialties (ESP) is part of the College of Education (COE) and offers undergraduate and graduate programs in special education, career and technical education, bilingual and multicultural education, and educational technology. The ESP Department prepares educators for excellence in teaching with diverse student populations in diverse learning environments while being aligned with the strategic priorities of NAU to elevate excellence for a bold and boundless future. The Bilingual Multicultural Education program spans courses leading to the SEI, ESL, and Bilingual endorsements MED program in Education. Courses in the Bilingual Multicultural Education area are offered in hybrid modalities with students enrolling across the state and beyond.

About the Position

The ESP Department seeks a new colleague for the position of Assistant Teaching Professor or Lecturer within the ESL and Bilingual Multicultural Education area beginning in August 2024. The position is for a 4/4 teaching load with a combination of undergraduate and graduate courses and is eligible for annual renewal. Candidates must demonstrate a commitment to equity and justice in education and excellence in teaching university students historically minoritized within education systems.

We invite applications to contribute to the Department of Educational Specialties graduate programs through teaching and scholarship on the preparation of teachers who use linguistically and culturally sustaining approaches. The successful candidate will have enthusiasm for teaching at the graduate and undergraduate level and expertise in ESL and Bilingual education, with a special focus on diversity applied to one or more of the following areas: applied linguistics, ESL methods, or assessment of minority learners.

Responsibilities Include:

  • Teach undergraduate and graduate Bilingual Multicultural Education courses in face-to-face, hybrid, and online modalities. Support the educational goals and learning needs of students historically minoritized by education systems (for example, Students of Color such as Latinx/e and Indigenous students, linguistically diverse students, first-generation college students, students with dis/abilities, etc.).
  • Collaborate with Bilingual Multicultural Education colleagues to design course/program curricula through a lens of equity and justice.
  • Contribute to service on department, college, and university committees.
  • Advise graduate students in the ESL and Bilingual Education master’s program.

This position is an on-site position which requires the incumbent to complete their work primarily at an NAU site, campus, or facility with or without accommodation. Opportunities for remote work are rare.

Beginning in August 2024, this position is a full-time, benefit-eligible, 9-month non-tenure track faculty position, with the opportunity for paid summer teaching.

Minimum Qualifications

  • The Lecturer position rank requires an earned master’s degree while the Assistant Teaching Professor rank requires a doctoral degree by the date of hire in Education, English as a Second Language, Bilingual Multicultural Education, or Special Education.
  • Birth – 12th grade teaching experience.

Preferred Qualifications

  • An earned doctoral degree in Education, Bilingual Multicultural Education, Curriculum and Instruction, or English as a Second Language.
  • 3+ years of successful Preschool-12th grade certified classroom teaching experience with racially and linguistically diverse students (or a combination of certified classroom teaching experience with instructional aide, school-wide coaching, tutoring, professional development, or district leadership experience).
  • Experience teaching at the university level in face-to-face, hybrid, or online modalities.
  • Experience in a language taught in Arizona dual language classrooms. This may include Spanish, Mandarin, French, or an Arizona tribal language.
  • Experience successfully supporting the educational goals and learning needs of students historically minoritized by education systems (for example, Students of Color such as Latinx/e and Indigenous students, linguistically diverse students, first-generation college students, students with dis/abilities, etc.).
  • Ability/experience collaborating with colleagues to pursue research or course/program curriculum development related to ESL and Bilingual Multicultural Education.
  • Ability/experience that complements and/or extends the existing theoretical, learning design, or methodological knowledge base of the ESL and Bilingual Multicultural Education area.
  • Fluent in a heritage language of Arizona classrooms.
  • Be familiar with AZ ESL policies, practices, and procedures.
  • Understand theory of first and second language acquisition.
  • Experience in inclusive and culturally sustaining theories, standards, or practices for ESL and Bilingual Multicultural Education.

Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities

  • Ability to teach university students in face-to-face, hybrid, or online modalities.
  • Ability to prepare classroom teachers in the methods of ESL, dual language, immersion, and Structured English Immersion.
  • Ability to support the educational goals and learning needs of students historically marginalized by education systems.
  • Knowledge of and ability to teach inclusive and culturally sustaining theories, standards, or practices for ESL and Bilingual Education.
  • Ability to collaborate with colleagues to pursue research or course/program curriculum development relating to ESL and Bilingual Education.
  • Ability/experience that complements and/or extends the existing theoretical, learning design, or methodological knowledge base of the ESL and Bilingual Multicultural Education area.

Compensation & Benefits

Anticipated salary is $60,000. Annual salary commensurate with candidate’s qualifications and related experience.

This is a Faculty (FAC) position. NAU offers an excellent benefit package including generous health, dental and vision insurance; participation in the Arizona State Retirement System (ASRS) or the Optional Retirement Program (ORP); sick leave accruals and 10 holidays per year; and tuition reduction for employees and qualified family members. More information on benefits at NAU is available at the NAU HR benefits page. Faculty are hired on a contract basis, renewable according to terms of the Conditions of Faculty Service. Employees offered a position will be eligible for state health plans (including NAU’s BCBS Plan). Employees will have 31 days from date of hire to enroll in benefits, and their benefits will then be effective the first day of the pay period following their completed enrollment. If a new employee chooses the Arizona State Retirement System (ASRS) retirement option, participation in the ASRS Plan (and the long-term disability coverage that accompanies it) will begin on the first of the pay period following 183 days of employment. New employees who choose to participate in the Optional Retirement Plan (ORP; an alternative to the ASRS plan) will begin to participate on the first day of the pay period following election. The long-term disability plan that accompanies the ORP will begin on the first day of the pay period following election. More information about NAU benefits is available at the NAU HR benefits page. 

Pre-Employment Check

In addition, the Fire Safety Report is combined with the Annual Security Report for the NAU Flagstaff Mountain Campus as this campus has on-campus student housing.
