The Opportunity:
The Department of Mathematics at Simon Fraser University invites applications for a 66.67% part-time Lecturer position starting August 1st, 2025. The primary purpose of this position is to support, develop, and deliver mathematics courses for students in the Indigenous University Preparation Pathway (IUPP) program (https://www.sfu.ca/students/admission/admission-requirements/indigenous-students/iupp.html). The IUPP provides a pathway for Indigenous learners to prepare and transition to undergraduate studies. It offers first-year academic credit courses that integrate humanities and social sciences with Indigenous perspectives.

Faculty salaries at SFU are based on the salary scales bargained between the University and the SFU Faculty Association. A reasonable estimate of the base salary range for this part-time Lecturer position is $98,340 to $114,241 per annum, depending on experience, prorated to the appointment FTE (66.67%). Qualifications:

The position requires a minimum of:
– a master’s degree in mathematics or applied mathematics or mathematics education (a PhD degree will be considered an asset);
– proven strength in teaching mathematics;
– ability to teach various problem-solving strategies in introductory undergraduate courses;
– dedication to creating an environment that supports diverse populations and perspectives, with a strong focus on IUPP students, staff and collaborators, and a commitment to creating inclusive learning experiences;
– a strong understanding and experience working with Indigenous communities and peoples, with a commitment to culturally responsive teaching practices.

The following will be considered as important assets:
– demonstrated interest in curriculum development, specifically in developing teaching material and methods that advance Indigenous students’ success, and decolonization and indigenization of the mathematics curriculum;
– a record of or strong commitment to service and collegial governance;
– involvement in initiatives – including, but not limited to, research – related to mathematics education, particularly with a focus on Indigenous pedagogy and student success;
– a commitment to building and maintaining respectful relationships with Indigenous partners within SFU (Indigenous faculty/staff/students);
– a demonstrated commitment to reconciliation and decolonization through participation in relevant initiatives.

The Department of Mathematics uses the workshop (learning centre) model to support students enrolled in lower division courses. The duties of the successful candidate might include coordination of a workshop and supervision and mentoring of teaching assistants affiliated with the workshop.

The normal teaching load for a 66.67% Lecturer position is 4 courses per year. The Lecturer will provide service to the IUPP and the Department, for example through membership on internal committees, participating in teaching and curriculum initiatives, and active participation in outreach. Teaching related duties comprise 80% of workload and service contributions 20%.

– 3 reference letters, with at least two letters speaking to teaching ability, including ideally at least one reference from an Indigenous community, organization, or program.
