Primary Purpose of Department 

The School of Data Science (SDS) is an interdisciplinary unit governed by six colleges. Currently, the school hosts a Bachelor of Science in Data Science, an undergraduate certificate in Sports Analytics, and two MS programs (Data Science and Business Analytics and Health Informatics and Analytics). The SDS was formed in January 2020 and was the first School of Data Science in the Carolinas. This unit teaches and researches methods to apply statistics and computer science to areas of passion of the students and faculty. These vary from the ethical application and use of data to communication studies, business, healthcare, political science, transportation, engineering, and more. The School strives to improve the world through the appropriate use of data. The School has grown quickly to well over 700 students and is continuing to evolve with the needs of the students, university, and community. The SDS is preparing to launch a new Ph.D. in Data Science in the fall of 2025.

Description of Work

Thus, the Job Responsibilities and Essential Functions for Non-Tenure Track Faculty should be interpreted in the context of the related departmental and collegiate teaching goals.

Teaching – Faculty responsibilities and essential functions with respect to teaching may include but are not limited to: subject matter competence, course design, course presentation, and grading student work.

Essential Duties and ResponsibilitiesThe non-tenure track faculty position will be a nine-month appointment in the School of Data Science. Successful candidates will teach undergraduate and potentially graduate courses related to data science, contribute to curriculum design and development, continually learn and improve pedagogy to enhance student learning, be actively involved in university service, and assist in recruiting students to associated programs. The faculty may serve as an expert data scientist, provide advice, and participate in projects and research. Candidates should meet the criteria for appointment to the graduate faculty. Teaching is expected to be face-to-face with the potential to be online on an as-needed basis as determined by the School.

The School of Data Science is structured by an innovative interdisciplinary studio course model. This position will contribute to co-teaching the four level studio progression, which entails students working in groups on professional data science research projects. As such, these studio courses prepare students to employ data science techniques, engage in the process of original research, consider the ethical implications of data, and effectively communicate their findings. Experience with Python, statistical analysis, algorithms, machine learning and data visualization is essential to this role. Additional pedagogical experience in any of the following is also valuable to this position: social science applications, research methods, data ethics, and written and oral communication.

General workload (subject to modification)

Lecturer/Sr. Lecturer: 80% teaching/20% service

Teaching Professor (Assistant, Associate, Full): 60% teaching/20% Research/20% service. Research is likely to be applied data science and may be pedagogical in nature.

Minimum Experience/EducationUNC Charlotte gives primary consideration to the earned masters and/or terminal degree in the teaching discipline or a related discipline.

Master’s in Data Science, Information Management, Computer Science, Statistics, Math, Engineering, Economics, or related discipline including quantitative social scientists and humanists. Demonstrated excellence in teaching at the collegiate level, and commitment to student success. Evidence of leadership in instruction and instructional innovation.

Teaching Assistant Professor/Teaching Associate Professor/Teaching Professor

Ph.D. degree in Data Science, Information Management, Computer Science, Statistics, Math, Engineering, Economics, or related discipline including quantitative social scientists and humanists. Demonstrated excellence in teaching at the collegiate level, and commitment to student success. Evidence of leadership in instruction and instructional innovation.

Evidence of continued professional development in the pedagogy of programming, data analysis, and data science. Demonstrated ability and willingness to participate in department, college, and university affairs.
