The English Department is now accepting applications for Part Time Lecturers for the 2024-25 academic year. These positions are non-tenure eligible with a service period of 9 months. Appointments are determined by program need, available funding, and the eligible pool of candidates. We will assemble a pool of qualified candidates now and anticipate making offers as soon as possible. After initial offers are made in the spring and/or summer, additional hires, quarters and courses may be added depending on available funding. Duties: The duties will include teaching courses in the Program in Writing & Rhetoric (PWR), the Program for Writing Across Campus (PWAC), upper division English literature and language courses, and/or creative writing courses. 

Salary: The appointment will be 50% FTE at 50% of the full-time rate. The full-time base salary range for this position will be $4670 – $6946 per month, prorated based on the appointment FTE, and commensurate with experience and qualifications, or as mandated by a U.S. Department of Labor prevailing wage determination.

Qualifications

Eligibility: To be eligible for an offer for Autumn Quarter 2024, applicants must have received their terminal degree by the end of Summer Quarter 2024. Priority for full year offers will be given to those who have completed their Ph.D. by the end of Spring Quarter 2024. Applicants with satisfactory progress toward the degree and demonstrated teaching excellence will be given preference. Applicants completing their degree during Summer Quarter may receive an offer contingent on completion of the degree during summer quarter. To be eligible for appointments starting Winter Quarter 2025, the terminal degree must be completed before the end of Autumn Quarter 2024. Anyone expecting to be eligible anytime in the coming year must apply now, indicating the quarter in which they expect to be complete the degree.

All applications will be submitted through Interfolio. For required items involving multiple pages or documents, please combine into one document to upload to that required item’s slot.

Applications should include:

  • Letter of application addressed to Anis Bawarshi, Chair, and modeled on those for any college teaching position. Include all programs in which you would be interested to teach, as well as your dates of availability.
  • ABD applicants: include how many dissertation chapters are complete, how many are yet to be completed, and projected date of graduation.
  • Curriculum vitae including areas in which the applicant is prepared to teach.
  • A one-page list of courses taught at UW or elsewhere by year.
  • A statement of teaching philosophy (1-2 pages).
  • Quantitative student course evaluations from four recent courses (include, if possible, a range of courses taught at UW over the last two years), along with, if desired, a contextualizing document.
  • A sample syllabus from one recent course, accompanied by no more than 6 pages of supporting material (goals for the course, reading list, assignments, classroom exercises, etc.).
  • Three confidential letters of recommendation dated within the past 12 months.
