Project Description:

Condition monitoring is the process of monitoring the health and performance of machinery and equipment in real-time or periodically to identify any deviations from normal operating conditions. The goal is to detect early signs of potential issues or failures so that maintenance can be scheduled proactively, minimizing downtime and reducing the risk of costly repairs. AI and Machine Learning can significantly enhance condition monitoring by enabling more advanced analysis of data collected from various sensors and sources. AI can be used for anomaly detection, fault diagnosis and predictive maintenance of systems, reducing cost of monitoring equipment and avoiding downtime. In this project we will develop AI-based condition monitoring for wastewater and stormwater process equipment in sustainable urban drainage, using a combination of acoustic and other sensors and Smart technology for data acquisition. As well as co-funding the studentship, Hydro International will provide site access to equipment and help with developing monitoring systems for the data acquisition.

This award provides annual funding to cover Home tuition fees and a tax-free stipend. For students who pay Home tuition fees the award will cover the tuition fees in full, plus at least £19,237 per year tax-free stipend.

The studentship will be awarded on the basis of merit for 3.5 years of full-time study to commence on 23 September 2024. The collaboration involves a project partner who is providing funding [and other material support to the project], this means there are special terms that apply to the project, these will be discussed with Candidates at Interview and fully set out in the offer letter.

International applicants need to be aware that you will have to cover the cost of your student visa, healthcare surcharge and other costs of moving to the UK to do a PhD.
