Position description

The Development and Outreach Department of Human Rights Watch (HRW) is seeking applicants for the position of Manager to focus on fundraising in Sweden. The Manager will lead the work on events in Sweden, including the HRW flagship fundraising event, the Voices for Justice Annual Dinner, develop strategic donor relations, and identify new fundraising channels. In collaboration with the Development and Outreach Team in Stockholm, the Manager will develop and maintain a portfolio of supporters, create campaigns, and enhance both internal and external communication. This full-time position will be based in our Stockholm office and will report to the Stockholm City Director, responsible for fundraising.

The successful candidate will be expected to work from the Stockholm office at least 3 days per week. We aim to be as flexible and supportive as possible in both the recruitment for and onboarding of this position.

Responsibilities:

1. Work in partnership with the Stockholm City Director on the fundraising strategy for Sweden to explore new fundraising areas and on its implementation;

2. Manage the production and planning of fundraising, outreach, and cultivation events in Sweden, including HRW’s annual Voices for Justice dinner, researcher briefings, advocacy conferences, and privately hosted dinners;

3. Identify areas of interest for our community with regards to HRW’s work so that the fundraising team can adopt a proactive and strategic approach to events;

4. As a part of the fundraising strategy, create a communication strategy for donors;

5. Manage various aspects of the Stockholm Committee, our group of volunteers who support the organization through fundraising and advocacy initiatives, including committee meetings, communications, events, and projects and working closely with the committee chair;

6. Work with the Stockholm City Director to research identify, cultivate, and solicit new prospects, existing donors, and Stockholm Committee members;

7. Oversee prospect and donor research and manage Salesforce donor entry;

8. Represent the work of HRW to existing and prospective supporters; and

9. Perform other responsibilities as may be required. 

Qualifications:

Education: A bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience in communications, marketing, social sciences, or related studies is required.

Experience: A minimum of five years of relevant fundraising experience is required, with a preference for some event planning experience.

Related Skills and Knowledge:

1. Demonstrated ability in managing high-level donor relationships is required. 

2. Experience coordinating events, preferably large-scale events is required. 

3. Creativity, initiative, follow-through, and excellent organizational skills are required. 

4. Commitment to working with staff and partners in a positive, collaborative, diverse, and inclusive work environment is required. 

5. Strong oral and written communications skills in English and Swedish are required. 

6. Demonstrated commitment to human rights and/or international issues and the capacity to master and represent the mission and programs of HRW are required. 

7. Demonstrated awareness and sensitivity to the needs and concerns of individuals from diverse cultures, backgrounds, and orientations are required. 

8. An entrepreneurial and disciplined self-starter who can work independently, but also function as a member of a development team, is highly desirable. 

9. Familiarity with fundraising in Sweden is strongly preferred.
