At Town Center Veterinary Associates we provide a full range of services for dogs, cats and exotics. Our charming hospital is in a historic home in the heart of downtown Howell. Our 3 exam rooms are newly remodeled, and we have office space for our doctors. We are equipped with cutting-edge technology including our new ultrasound machine! We also feature a complete diagnostic laboratory and an in-house Pharmacy. We are proud to offer a comprehensive range of services including therapeutic laser treatment, dental care with digital radiology and surgeries including Cystotomies, Foreign Body Removal, Amputations, and limited Orthopedic procedures.

The Medical Director (MD) provides strategic direction, coaching, and mentoring to the associate veterinarians to ensure safe, consistent, efficient, therapeutic, and ethical patient care and outstanding client service. The MD will collaborate with the Practice Manager to develop a hospital annual operating plan. The MD will own responsibility for ensuring Clinic Revenue Targets are achieved and minimum Standards of Care are developed and complied with. The MD understands they will wear many hats and will be passionate about clinical excellence, leadership, recruiting, retention and advocating for the growth of Mission Veterinary Partners (MVP).

Requirements:

  • Licensed MI Veterinarian (active and clear)
  • Excellent, demonstrated medical and surgical skills are essential
  • Proven ability to work collaboratively with colleagues, DVMs, and teammates to build a results-driven, team-oriented environment.
  • 3+ years’ DVM experience
  • 1+ years Leadership experience desired but not required

Responsibilities

How you’ll make an impact: 

Veterinary Duties (60%) 

  • Perform duties included in the associate DVM job description. 
  • Achieve specific production goals as elected in the business plan or as assigned by the SMD. 
  • Maintain veterinary excellence by attending mandated annual CE, striving for continuous improvement, leading innovation within the veterinary team. 

DVM Mentoring, Training and Development (20% of Time) 

  • Work with the DVM’s to leverage support staff to improve workflow efficiency and deliver outstanding patient/client care based on implemented Standards of Care. 
  • The Medical Director will work alongside the PM to facilitate and manage the DVM’s. This may include Hiring, firing, disciplinary/corrective actions and the like. 
  • The Medical Director is to be responsible for oversight of the DVM works schedules. This may include creating, maintaining DVM work schedules and making appropriate adjustments for PTO and/or CE time off requests. 
  • Collaborate with the hospital medical team to implement management strategies to increase pet care visits, per client transaction (PCT) maximization and appropriate charge capture. 
  • Hold monthly hospital doctors’ meetings. Attend, and participate in, regular Medical Director meetings held by the SMD and or MVP (Paw conference). 
  • Educate DVMs on the benefits of consolidating SKU’s, appropriate product selection and lab supplier selection. 
  • Ensure timely conveyance of hot topics in the news (i.e. pet food recalls, outbreaks, etc.) and provide educational pieces for team (i.e. Preventative Health Care). 
  • Collaborate with Strategic Medical Directors (SMD) to develop an annual operating plan for each clinic to include revenue targets and capex needs. 
  • Ensure compliance with all local, state, federal and DEA regulations within the hospital; ensure the hospital is exercising best practice for controlled substance compliance. 
  • In conjunction with the PM, facilitate and execute regular Doctor/Staff meetings that share best practices, advance medical knowledge and improve patient care standards as appropriate. 
  • Maintain and uphold Core Values and Mission Statement of MVP. 
  • Support of other MVP clinic leadership needs at request of SMD. 

Retention and Recruiting (10% of Time) 

  • Establish excellent relationships with hospital DVMs resulting in DVM engagement, retention, medical and surgical skill development, compassion fatigue abatement and modeling appropriate leadership behaviors. 
  • Work with associate veterinarians to develop a performance optimization plan and conduct annual reviews, as well as quarterly score card reviews. More frequent meetings to be held as needed to ensure peak performance. 
  • Assist in staffing needs evaluation to promote medical team efficiency and optimal team leverage 
  • Participate in the interview process and support contract negotiations (with SMD) for associate veterinarians; other staff as needed to support the PM. 
  • Build relationships with DVMs and staff at non-MVP clinics with a constant eye towards attracting the top talent in the region to the MVP family. 
  • Promote and supervise internship, externship and mentorship programs to ensure a positive experience for students. 
  • Support the PM in the organization of community events; enthusiastically attend as needed. 

Initiative Support (10% of Time) 

  • Support New Business Development by identifying leads and promoting brand awareness. 
  • Ensure positive and professional conduct and act as a referral source for MVP. 
  • Initiate strategic educational program development to ensure teammates remain up to date on Mission Veterinary Partners policies, new laws and regulations impacting work, and other information necessary to provide knowledgeable, accurate care. 
  • Support new initiative rollouts at clinic level, e.g., Vetspire, Antec, Preferred Vendor partners, etc. 

Qualifications

Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Demonstrated experience in planning and managing at the DVM level. 
  • Intermediate computer skills and proficiency in MS Excel, MS Word, Outlook, and PowerPoint required. 
  • Fluent in the written and verbal skills necessary to successfully perform the essential functions, duties, and responsibilities of the position (English).
