St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital

The Department of Radiation Oncology at St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital is seeking a medical physicist to join its faculty. Appointment rank will be based on experience and record of academic productivity and publications.

The department is focused on research and treatment of pediatric patients with an emphasis on the treatment of brain, musculoskeletal, and solid tumors. Preference will be given to candidates with a strong interest in proton therapy and developing new methods of targeting, treatment planning, delivery, and toxicity modeling. There are opportunities for collaborations with investigators in several cancer center programs. The position includes a significant commitment of resources allowing for protected research time and support.

The department currently supports four full-time medical physics faculty, six clinical physicists, four dosimetrists, two medical physics assistants, a dedicated linear accelerator engineer, and information systems and research staff, inclusive of research scientists, post-doctoral fellows, and clinical research associates. The department includes five full-time pediatric radiation oncologists, dedicated nursing and radiation therapy teams and child life specialists. The department is one of the largest pediatric radiation oncology facilities in the world and treats approximately 300 children, adolescents, and young adults each year.

The department has 45,000 square feet of clinical space that includes a dedicated clinic, treatment planning, therapy, and sedation and anesthesia support. There is one linear accelerator with image-guidance and multiple imaging platforms (spectral CT, PET/CT, 1.5T MR and 3.0T MR) dedicated to treatment planning and on-treatment assessment. The Proton Therapy Center facility includes a synchrotron, high-energy beam transport, two gantry rooms and a fixed beam room. Each room is equipped with high-precision patient positioning, volumetric image-guidance systems, and dedicated scanning nozzles. The Proton Therapy Center is the first in the world dedicated solely to the treatment of children with cancer.

The successful candidate will have a Ph.D. in medical physics, engineering, or related physical science. Certification in radiation oncology physics by ABR/ABMP/CCPM or eligibility for certification is highly desired. Foreign equivalencies for these qualifications may be considered.
