Normal Work Schedule: M-F 8-5, occasional nights & weekends, must be able to work on-call duty

Job Summary:  The Mental Health Professional II (MHP II) provides clinical services to clients and fulfills specific clinical and supervisory functions. Some of the primary responsibilities include providing clinical services, completing client assessments and case management. The MHP II may exercise clinical oversight and supervision, serve as a liaison among stakeholders and provide significant discipline-specific and agency-wide leadership on clinical matters.

Additional Department Summary: This position provides direct counseling services to enrolled University students, outreach and consultation services to members of the University community, and, as needed, training to students in the mental health professions. This position is expected to rotate on-call throughout the year for the purpose of crisis intervention services. Due to the complex nature of human problems, this position requires a high degree of sophistication of thought and creativity. The incumbent routinely works with people in distress and encounters life-threatening emergencies. The person in this position will, for example, intervene with a student who is acutely suicidal and making threats in his or her residential area. Such situations call for excellent judgment, problem solving, and a thorough knowledge of the myriad factors behind the resolution of psychological problems. The incumbent is expected to be knowledgeable about and adhere to all policies and procedures as contained in the Counseling Center Policy and Procedure Manual. The incumbent will also follow Quality Improvement standards. Along with all staff, the Staff Therapist should have a proven record of and continually demonstrate exemplary attitudes and performance in the areas of teamwork and proactively assisting all constituencies within the scope of the Counseling Center mission.
Responsible for completing required training and promoting a safe, hospitable, and respectful workplace. This position requires some after-hours work.

Required Minimum Qualifications: Master’s degree in a mental health related field. Two years of mental health experience. Licensure in the state of Alabama.

Additional Required Department Minimum Qualifications: Master’s degree in Counseling, Psychology, or Social Work and two (2) years of experience in consultation services, group therapy, outreach, or case management. Licensure in the state of Alabama at the level of an independent practitioner. Related student or Graduate Assistant, Intern, or student-oriented experience will be considered. Skills and Knowledge: The occupant must possess excellent human relations, communication, advocacy, and mental health intervention skills. He or she must possess superior skills in the area of time and task management, including the use or departmental resources to stay up to date on customer needs. Effective verbal and written communication skills. Ability to work flexible and evening hours. Ability to work with diverse populations. Demonstrated use of sound judgment and competence in managing critical incidents and communications with others. This position requires basic computer skills such as word processing and email, and the ability to effectively interact with University community members for the purpose of program development.

Preferred Qualifications: College or University counseling center experience preferred.
