Mercy is an independent, community-based organization that has been supporting the Cedar Rapids area for over 120 years.

The MBSCR works closely with the members of the metabolic and bariatric and general surgery departments to identify opportunities for clinical quality improvement and other special projects that may be identified.

Job Duties

  • Adopts and employs technology.
  • The ability to learn and utilize new software and Web applications for data entry and report generation
  • Must have computer experience with Microsoft Office, Microsoft Excel, and basic statistical skills.
  • Participates in the development, implementation and tracking of outcome measures.
  • Participates in the ongoing implementation of current regulatory standards in order to meet state and national agency requirements.
  • Promotes positive patient/customer relations and builds positive, trusting relationships throughout MMC.
  • Identifies operational problems, suggests corrective action and brings to the attention of the appropriate clinical leader.
  • Reviews and processes orders.
  • Demonstrates ability to lead and/or facilitate teams and/or projects toward successful achievement of agreed upon goals.
  • Utilizes hospital information systems to process orders/data and retrieve patient information.
  • Establishes and maintains collaborative relationships with the health care team.
  • Follows Mercy’s safety guidelines, carries out job-specific safety duties and responsibilities, and promptly reports any unsafe conditions, situations, incidents and injuries.
  • Demonstrates effective problem identification and resolution.
  • Regularly evaluates programs, orientation, and staff development and identifies plans for improvement.
  • Demonstrates an awareness of self-responsibility and accountability for own professional practice and development.
  • Works independently with limited direct supervision using nursing standards and professional judgement.
  • Demonstrates tolerance of diverse lifestyles of patient and families.
  • Maintains knowledge of documentation requirements needed for patients’ records including knowledge of computer applications.
  • Fosters identification of patient safety risks and application of practices to reduce harm.

Department Specific Duties

  • Identifies 100 percent of metabolic and bariatric patients for inclusion in the MBSAQIP Registry.
  • Must participate in bariatric program meetings and teleconferences. (MBS Committee Meetings are required)
  • Must be able to interpret and present data collected upon request and during MBS Committee Meetings.
  • Must actively participate in data compilation for audits and (re)accreditation or site visits and assist coordinator as needed.
  • Periodically attends voluntary in-person professional development seminars offered at various annual meetings.
  • Manages Accreditation criteria to ensure clinic/facility/program meets expectations set forth by governing agencies. Maintains and ensures compliance of all policies and procedures that guide and support the assigned services
  • Collaborates on an ongoing basis with Medical Director, clinic staff and physicians, promoting positive communication techniques and the ability to problem solve at every level.
  • Works closely and directly with the MBS (Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery) Coordinator.
  • The MBSCR works closely with the members of the metabolic and bariatric surgery team to review SAR to identify, track, and implement quality improvement projects based on SAR outcomes.
  • Independently manages workflows to, as requested, meet established deadlines and performs abstraction and data entry to meet identified deadlines for successful submission of data to MBSAQIP Registry.
  • Consistently completes targeted clinical case reviews utilizing clinical decision making, critical thinking, and objectivity.
  • Ensures effective staff education, including orientation, focused education, and reinforcement education, to achieve performance outcomes for leading best practice and safe care.
  • Contributes to and supports Bariatric program staff, and educators through planning, implementing and evaluating educational effort and learning methods.
  • Actively participates/coordinates committees, task forces, and in work groups as needed/requested.
  • Collects preoperative, intraoperative, 30-day postoperative, and long-term follow-up data components for the program through the effective utilization of the hospital medical record systems.
  • Identifies streamlining and process improvement opportunities in the data collection process in collaboration with the entire bariatric surgery team.
  • The MBSCR is required to make attempts to capture 30-day and long-term follow-up data within the prescribed assessment and data entry timeframes outlined in the MBSAQIP Registry.
  • The MBSCR may need to fulfill request for outcomes data and report to the MBS Committee and other appropriate personnel.
  • Serves as an education resource on the MBSAQIP Registry for internal and external audiences by developing educational materials and delivering presentations.

Professional Experience

  • Knowledge of medical terminology, basic anatomy, physiology, and disease process is required.
  • Minimum one year experience in a hospital surgery department, surgery clinic, clinical research, data registry, or medical records.
  • Clinical chart review and abstraction experience required.
  • Computer and internet experience required.
  • Knowledge and comfort with Microsoft Office products are essential.
  • Quality improvement or patient safety knowledge and experience preferred.
  • Basic or intermediate statistical knowledge preferred.

Education

  • Bachelor degree preferred
  • RN (Registered Nurse), or BSN required.
  • Ability to complete all online training modules and pass the certification examination is required.

Licensure, Certification, Registration

  • Currently licensed to practice as a Registered Nurse in the state of Iowa required.
  • Must successfully complete the online MBSCR Training Program upon hire and as directed by the MBSAQIP.
